He was amazing at controlling the ball, turning and shielding it from opposition players. He never used to lose possession. What a sensational holding midfielder and has to be as good as any in his position over the last 10 years.Originally posted by The Glove View PostOh no mate. He was a great player. Anytime we were under any pressure, he would break up the play by some how getting tackled and winning us a free kick. Very clever.

Really? Wild horses wouldn't get me to agree with that. And wild horses are persuasive as you know.Originally posted by Cormack74 View PostAgreed. Mascher's good but he's not as good as Didi (yet).
Masher for me is in a different class to Didi in pretty much every department.
I'm not meaning to slag Hamann off, I just feel what he did was very basic and he did that basic thing reasonably well.
Masher plays the same role but is far more expansive, far quicker, gets around the pitch more, far more available, and works his bollocks off. They're beyond comparison in my view.

Didi was a first rate tackler, and he also had a stinging shot on him.
I remember a couple of years ago we played Arsenal off the park, but couldn't score against them. Rafa brought on Didi and Garcia (if I remember correctly), and Lil' Luis scored off a rebound from a Hamann scorcher.
As much as I like Masher, he doesn't really seem the type that could bail you out with a long range shot.

Didi did what for years though? Break up play? And get fouled? And pass it sideways a few yards? Yes he did and he did all that pretty well, but thats the limit of what he did.Originally posted by DJS View PostDidi did it for years and years though. Bit early yet for Masher.
He never approached the kind of play that Masher does in the exact same role. Masher is an absolute masterclass. Didi, for me, offered a limited, one dimensional, view of what that role should be. Masher's demonstration of how to play the role exposes just how limited Didi's game was.
He wasn't without value but we'd have been a better side all that time with Masher playing there instead of him. In my humble opinion.

What was Hamann's goalscoring record from midfield? Anyone?Originally posted by glynner View PostDidi was a first rate tackler, and he also had a stinging shot on him.
