just looked it up, 8 goals in 7 seasons. hardly someone who bailed us out with his goalscoring prowess. personally, when he shaped to shoot i'd yell NOOOOO in the sure knowledge that his shooting was poo and he needed to pass it instead.

Once a year (on average) he'd prove me wrong.

He still deserves a song of course, I just think everyone overrates him massively.

What about THAT volley against Pompey...

Goal of the season if memory serves.

He was never a goalscorer, for sure - but even in my post above the winning goal came from a Hamann rebound.

He wasn't without value but we'd have been a better side all that time with Masher playing there instead of him. In my humble opinion.
He was a key player in our team for many years.

Whether or not you particularly rated him or not is irrespective, for all those years, he was a key player and maintained his level throughout.

Warrants a huge amount of respect.

When Masher's done his bit for 3 or 4 years, then it's different.

He was a calming influence. You may not have seen him hit 80 yard passes, or score 30 yard goals or run 60 yards to put a tackle in but by **** when he didnt play we looked a worse side.

Still only one goal. No matter how good, it only counts the same as a rebound off somebody's arse.

He scored once a year on average, never more than two, and sometimes not at all in a whole season. But he is nonetheless remembered as a great marksman.

I think this shows the extent of the Hamann myth.

As I say, he deserves his song, deserves his role in our history, but in my view a very limited player who defined his role in the most basic terms and then fulfilled those basic terms reasonably well.

Masher's arrival only shows for me just how limited Didi was.

                  Didi-Didi-Didi-Didi, Didi-Didi-Didi-Didi HAMANN!

Disagree, Didi was a better passer than Mascher, he had a much better shot and he had the same ability at breaking up opposition attacks. I'm pretty sure he had some of the best passing stats in the league.

Didi was the biggest cheat we ever had, but i a nice way, he got more dodgy free kicks than that Portuguese nerk at OT. Amazing refs never worked it out, speaking to a City seaso holder i know he still does it now, wont be so funny on Sunday.
Was one of my favourite players for years, we would have won the CL under Houllier if he hadnt taken him off against Leverkusen (opinion not fact!)

That's because he only tended to pass it 2 yards and generally backward. We'll have to agree to differ on this one I think

I seem to remember him scoring for the enemy against England in a minor game at Wembley.

                              Shocking day that
