It can be the old Jones and McAteer thing going onOriginally posted by dww View PostI know you are joking (and I hate the magic square formation) but I do think two genuine attacking fullbacks who are comfortable on the ball and can cross is the way forward.
I really wish Aurelio could stay fit as he would be one of the two.

It would be a very popular move, believe me..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

I'm not sure what the future holds for Arbeloa. He is been fantastic this season but after Aurelio's performance today, I remembered how effective it can be to have fullbacks with real craft.
If we could add two penetrative wingers too, then we could make the most of the 4-2-3-1 system that everybody seems to fancy. It's not good because it's rude. It's good because it looks like it's good because it's rude.

I think that Arbeloa will always have a squad position available to him. He can play in a number of positions and his technique is sound. He could be an equivalent of say a John O'Shea or Wes Brown in terms of squad role if he is willing to accept that. It is the sort of player in the future I would hope our academy will aim to churn out but until that is true I think he is an ideal member of the squad.Originally posted by Alpha View Post

When was the last time a full back scored?
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it Riise against PSV?
This is a major problem we have in our current squad. Too many players apart from Torres and Gerrard that are non-existent goal threats.
Is it any surprise then when those two are off the boil, we don't score?Last edited by MascheredUp; 31-12-07, 12:35 AM.18 + 5 = Englands greatest export

Ridiculous, Arbeloa will be 1st choice RB very soon if he isn't already. He is rated as highly as Alonso by Rafa in terms of importance to the team, comparing him to OShea or Brown is an insultOriginally posted by dww View PostI think that Arbeloa will always have a squad position available to him. I wasn't comparing quality, but I do think that in an attacking sense at least Arbeloa is lacking from what we need to progress as a side if we are to continue with our current team shape.Originally posted by Dave Benson Phillips View PostRidiculous, Arbeloa will be 1st choice RB very soon if he isn't already. Also Wes Brown has improved markedly as a right back this season IMO. I still prefer Arbeloa as a player but Wes Brown fits United's system very well."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I think one of the main reasons why we struggle to break teams down is because our quality from the wings is sporadic.Originally posted by dww View PostI wasn't comparing quality, but I do think that in an attacking sense at least Arbeloa is lacking from what we need to progress as a side if we are to continue with our current team shape.

Everybody contributes something but if we could match the consistent quality we have in the centre on our flanks, we would be more dangerous and more balanced. That's stating the obvious, really.
We should aspire to play with wingers and full-backs who can penetrate and deliver quality crosses at will. It's not good because it's rude. It's good because it looks like it's good because it's rude.
