Problem for is that Gerrard roams - a lot! He will rarely be in the box when the ball arrives from Kewell and Pennant. He thrives with the ball at his feet through the midfield and a quick little pass or a shot. I have rarely seen Gerrard connecting a cross with a header. Infact I think the last time that happend was in May 2005. So you're right - He will arrive late and I never really felt that have worked that well for us/SG. It never really gives us the pressure we're looking for. That particular feature is something Lampard does better IMHO.

But now he plays with both mascher and Alonso, he doesn`t need to drop deep. Knowing SG he`ll probably drop deep anyway and arrive late in the box.

We break, almost a great ball from Pennant through to free Gerrard. Scharner, playing in central defence, made the interception. Decent player Scharner, we could do worse as a short-term cover at the back.

Route 1 almost pays off for Wigan, Heskey flick drops in the box and a high foot from Valencia almost lofts it over Pepe who blocks it out. We clear.

I'd be totally honest. I think it's utter BS this formation. SG as 2nd striker at home?! Playing with both Alonso and Mascher at Anfield? Makes little sense imo.
