    Agger's injury...

... more of a worry than we thought?!

He seems to have been out for more than a few months now, with rumours of a return on the cards for the past few weeks, but with no sign of the lad actually on the pitch. Is his injury more of a concern than originally thought? Why isn't it healed by now?

The stories we've heard are that he's been running ok but having trouble kicking the ball. We also heard he returned to his homeland over the Christmas period to consult a doctor over there, or something along those lines, and was even trying different boots to see if it made a difference.

He's been out since Alonso was originally out, yet he's returned to action, finally. The initial timescale of his lay-off is well gone and my worry is that his foot hasn't healed right if it still concerns him when kicking the ball - but I'm no doctor.

Agger is a key figure for us and had formed a great understanding alongside Carragher since he broke into the first team. He's comfortable on the ball, can pass well, can bring the ball out of defence, and has even popped up with the odd cracking goal or two. But his main asset to us is that it allows us to play further up the pitch than when Hyypia plays, giving us an extra edge with our attacking plays.

The stories of us being after another defender in this transfer window grows (with Garay the latest to be linked), but that is natural with the ageing Hyypia our main experienced cover whilst Agger recovers. But is there more to it than that? Will Agger return sometime soon, or is the injury still causing him to delay his comeback for some time yet?

Odd isn't it. He's our best Centre Back so we could really do with him back asap.

The latest news I have read in the danish press, is that it could still be a while, depending on the willingness to gamble. Apparently the doctor in DK (an expert en foot and knees I think), has said that this type of inury takes longer than you would think, and if he starts putting pressure on it to early it can break out again.

He also said that at the moment (at christmas), an estimation of 25% chance that the injury would come back if he played matches...

As a bonus info, the injury is quite common with ballet dancers, and takes up to 6 months of treatment, according to the specialist...

Maybe he's just not a fast healer with bone injuries (cue hilarious penis joke), he did have shin splints when he first arrived and it took him months to get over that, so unless rafa gambles and throws him in v luton on sunday, we'll probably still him out for a little longer yet, which is maybe why Rafa sees CB as even more of a priority this window

Agger is better than Carragher. You only need to look at how we performed with Hyypia & Agger on the pitch a few months ago to see that.

Carragher is a great all out defender but Agger has developed into the real leader of our defence. It's not same without him, Carragher himself looks more calm and composed with Agger as his partner. He has been one of Rafa's most inspiring signings.

I think Carra is a better leader and far more inspirational to the rest of the team than Agger is.

But for me it's aout the partnership, not the individual, and Carras aggression and win at all costs mentality mixed with Aggers ability on the ball goes really well.

I also feel that Aggers pace allows us to keep a higher line which does really affect the teams ability to peg teams in.

Agger is probably a better technical player but I know who I'd back to put his life on the line for the club. We all dream and all that....

Putting your life on the line is not often required in football though. I don't think agger shirks a tackle or a block.

I agree he is our best centre back but Carra is our best pure defender.

Look at utd they have ferdinand, who is a footballer, who is fast and good in the air too.
And vidic who is a pure defender who can pass, he hardly ever just hoofs it down field. Sometimes carra is embarassing just smacking it anywhere. Surely he was tought to keep the ball as a kid... Until we can field two centre back who are decent of the ball, we can wave goodbye to building from the back, and just continue winning the second balls and hoping for the best.

Is it pure coincidence that Carra is ALWAYS the player who is making dramatic goal saving last ditch tackles? No.

Agger doesn't shirk a challenge, but Carra reads the danger far better. As I said earlier, it's about the partnership and I think they compliment each other very well.

Put it this way, if any manager in world football had the option of loaning Carra or Agger for 6 months (with both at full fitness), I would say that at least 90% would pick Carra.
