The worst example I have seen was either on Koptalk or YNWA, when Carra's mistake against Benfica for Simao's goal was actually blamed on Djimi - "it's not Carra's fault, it's because he's playing next to Traore" is what someone said

    That is an absolute disgrace.

Like it or not, a vast number of our fans are far more willing to accept crucial mistakes from Carra and Stevie than anyone else.

On refelection you may have something here, however it is worth pointing out that 'keepers' mistakes tend to be more noticeable, and result in a goal more often than not. I agree that Djimi was needleesly pilloried as his attitude was great. However Carra and Gerrard are our best players IMHO and are therefore less likely to draw flak.

Wether it should or shouldn't have, it did. And it cost us.

This is about Reina and I think he was fantastic last season but he is prone to Clownish behaviour(as are all but the really really top notch keepers.Since cup final he's blundered a fair bit, sometimes punished, sometimes not.You can get away with mistakes from anyone except your keeper. The more he does these things the quicker the defence will lose confidence in him and that leads to more confusion.Anyway I think he's a good keeper, just not a great one.
You hit the nail on the head in your first sentence. All keepers make mistakes, Cech made several last season but got away without any criticism because of his excellent first season, whilst Buffon has made some real howlers in his time, as has Iker Casillas. And those 3 are seen as the best in the business.

Pepe had an amazing year last year, he was probably the key to our defensive masterclass due to his confidence, organisational skills, concentration, and downright natural ability. Ok he's made slip ups this season, but when looked at they didn't cost us, and he's played well other than those occasions, including the home leg to Maccabi Haifa where that late world class save effectively put us through to the group stages. The manager has the upmost confidence in him and so do the defenders - which is what matters. And at only 23 years of age, has time to iron out those bloopers and turn from a fine keeper into a world class keeper.

It was used as an example. And the ball did go a fair distance. And he has every right to go where he wants - it's his penalty area. If he thinks the situation is best dealt with by him, he'll try and deal with it. Which is what I like about the guy, he's not a flapper or a ditherer.

Not really. it depends on if its out of character or the norm. Carra doing what he did against Everton was out of character so he can be forgiven. Reina gets closer scrutiny because howlers seem to be getting more regular. 2 howlers in 2 games costing us 2 goals. Carra 1 howler and how long was it since the last one that cost a goal?

              FA Cup Final.

I do agree to an extent about the form bit - but as said, when keepers make mistakes, it normally ends up costing goals - plus he kept 29 clean sheets last season, and has played well this season.

IMO he's nothing more than a very good player having some indifferent form at the minute. Much like the form that Carra and Stevie produced before Rafa arrived.

Im not sure Carra's own goal can be classed as a howler alongside the goal in the derby and West hams goal at Anfield but still.

I know he kept 29 clean sheets but to be fair, how may times did teams get thru our defence? Reina hardly had saves to make during that time. When he did a lot of them were shots from range and any shot from range needs to be very specail to beat a keeper. Dont get me wrong, I think Reina is the best keeper we have had for a long time but I think that says more about the ****e we have had than how much like Clemence he is.

He is nowhere near a Clemence, imo, Pepe doesn't even command the 6 yard box as much as Clem commanded the whole penalty area.

When he starts to take command & control of the defence with some authoritee, then we know he will have arrived. Hopefully he will be given the time and the defence to make it, and that he doesn't wish to ply his trade elsewhere, and that he is truly pushed to his capable limits by a decent understudy, whoever that may be, I personally think Carson is too good for that, but not quite there as our No1, whether he will stay is another matter and I reckon playing matches for a PL side is more important than being No2 at a top club.

I like Pepe, I just hope that deep down he wants to make here his home, rather than thinking of a move to a big club in Spain, which is my only worry.

It was a blunder in the 92nd minute of a game we had already lost, I'm not exactly worried about it

We are FAR too over-analytical about errors. Cech and Van Der Saar have made some howlers as well, and all of them have made some amazing saves.

Surely no-one would want Dudek or Carson instead?!

                        Brilliant GK.

I cant believe a witch hunt is underway.

He is part of a defensive unit, if the defence in front of him havent been performing then nervousness sets in. There isnt a GK in the premiership who hasnt made a howler once in a while.
