Basically his modus operandi is to go in promising all sorts and borrow up to the hilt. Try to leverage some kind of increase in value through some building or media TV scheme and then **** off after failing to invest in player resources. He'll lie through his teeth all the way and act with utter contempt for the fan base.

He's clearly about the money, if DIC offer him a decent profit he will take it and run.

Why is everyone assuming that thing's would be any better under the ownership of DIC? I'm sure they are just as capable of breaking promises and conducting bad business as anyone else. And I'd bet my ass that if you dug deep enough on their board of directors you'd find shady dealings in the past to at least equal those of Hicks. A far better option, if there is any option at all, is to start looking for new investment from scratch, perform thorough background checks on interested parties and include certain clauses into any takeover to avoid being shafted again.

This is what I suspect. When I get a chance later on I'll dig through the Echo articles from the time. I think they said that Hicks enterred the scene quite late on in the process. That coupled with how quickly the deal was completed makes me think they did little or no investigating into Hicks. It is clear they knew Gillett very well before the takeover, they'd met on previous occasions, DM and RP even visited him in Canada at one of the Canadiens ice hockey games as well, so like you say, may be they took Gillett on his word.
