Liverpool open contract talks with Peter Crouch

Liverpool open contract talks with Peter Crouch

    15/02/2008

Liverpool have opened contract talks with Peter Crouch to ward off interest from Aston Villa as Reds boss Rafa Benitez turns to the England striker to save their season.

Crouch only has 16 months left on his £40,000-a-week deal at Anfield.

And Villa boss Martin O'Neill was planning a £9million summer swoop for the gangly star.

But Benitez has got chief executive Rick Parry to start preliminary talks with Crouch about penning new terms.

The hitman is desperate to stay and Benitez's surprise move suggests the 26-year-old, who joined the Reds in 2005 from Southampton for £7m, could feature in more of the club's remaining Premier League games.

Anyone surprised by this if it's true?

Can't see Crouch wanting to sign a new deal after the way he's been treated.

Another thing that really ****s me off is why wait when he's only got 16 months left on his contract to get this sorted?

You would have thought we would have learnt our lesson with the Owen/Macmanaman contracts.

Giving him a new contract makes sense, that way he doesn't Bosman our arses.

Momo and Traore got new contracts and then were sold, so i'd say this means nothing.
    We come not to play.

probably just a ploy to get a few extra million for him.

Maybe we just want him to sign a new deal so we will get more for him when we sell him, like we did with Sissoko for example.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Although essentially it would mean nothing, I'd be delighted if he got another contract. He’s earned it and of course it would protect us in the event of him leaving and ensure we get his full value.

I doubt that he will sign a new deal if he isn't guaranteed more playing time. England is very important to him.

I think he will sign. He is all chummy with Gerrard and Carra and where would he go? Portsmouth? Villa? Newcastle?

Crouch would rather play Champions League football than not playing in Europe at all.

I hope he signs and stays with us for many years.

Very good player and not the problem of our attacking game.

All i've ever heard him say is how much he wants to stay. Never seen anything to suggest he wants out.

I think we need a different type of player as first choice but he is a splendid squad member and seems to have an excellent attitude.

Where is the evidence of this mythical bad attitude of Crouch's? Apart from him being rubbish in pre-season - which means precisely nothing.

I think it depends on what you mean by attitude to be honest. I think he has always appeared to work hard but the end of last season and this preseason he did look less 'on it' somehow. I have a suspicion that Rafa wanted him to alter his game in some way last season and after about mid way through the season Crouch returned to average form after seemingly making real progress as a player and that Rafa took this as a sign of something wrong. Obviously this is the most speculative of speculations though

Well, the fact that he was rubbish pre-season, and then rubbish early season when given opportunities. There's no concrete evidence I'll agree that his attitude was off. I was just extremely disappointed that given the very limited opportunities afforded to him early season he did very little to seize them. He did seem to be ambling about in a kind of non-purposeful manner as well. I just drew my own conclusions from that.

I think he has been much improved since the Arsenal game in Oct when he came on at Half-time. And credit to him for that.
