I remember being in the Cent for that Cup win over City. Think it ended up 4-2 - Litmanen was taken off at half-time for some reason but it was one of the best 45 minute performances I've seen. He was ****ing superb.

That's the one, it was frightening how good he was. I had pretty passive City fans who actually messaged me after the game to ask who he was as they'd never seen a performance like that for/against them.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostI remember being in the Cent for that Cup win over City. I kinda backed Heskey at the time as he did contribute. But he never kicked on... in fact the abiding memory i have of Heskey was kicking his standing leg when through on goal against united (?)... that was it for me and him after that.

Yes... he was a beast that season... and then the next few years he got progressively worse. The drop in form was staggering. He reminds me of Downing. Had the physique/ talent, but did not apply himself. I think it was the European Charity Cup thing where he demolished Bayern? Then seemed to fall apart. houllier sort of shoved him out wide, but really he had a fairly free role to come centrally to support Owen. I think the stats bore Fowler out as Owens best partner. Shame Houllier did not give them more time together, as Fowler had shown the quality of a deeper striker, especially his combos with Macca and CollymoreOriginally posted by fah-q View PostLoved Litmanen but there was a season when Heskey was a beast for us.
I think it was the treble winning season where he got 20 odd goalsIn the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

First season and a half Heskey was generally excellent - and on his day unplayable. Then the goals stopped, the doubts starter, the injuries took their toll and he ended up becoming an ineffective winger.James Philip Milner Fanclub #1

The football under Houllier was ****e. Apart from the treble season, and maybe the year after, we were awful the whole time. He had a lot of money to spend (for those days) too and wasted talents like Fowler and Litmanen, and bombed out Anelka for Diouf.
I know some supporters love him but tbh I really don't rate the guy.

I don't love him and agree with a lot of what you have said but I respect what he did for the club, he introduced a more professional culture into the club and got rid of the spice boys image that we were stuck with at the end of Evans's era.Originally posted by Patricks_Berger View PostThe football under Houllier was ****e. More importantly, he won stuff and I'd be more than happy with some trophies now.

Fowler of course argued in his book that the 'spice lads' culture was an exaggeration anyway. There is a lot in his book that I don't think stacks up but it always struck me as a bit odd that within a season of having a fabulous but inconsistent team we had Titi Camara and were supposed to be grateful.
