Time will tell, Im sure Stevie will get played in that position again, dont expect him to underperform either. We may even see him there again tonight.

          Never heard of him.
Marc Overmars was quite handy though.

Pennant is out according to Dave Usher so Gerrard maybe on the right

Not sure if now is the right time for him, but i'd love to see Anderson breaking into the team at some stage.

Gerrard played on the left in one game for a specific reason

                SG says:

"I'm the first to admit I was as surprised as anyone when I was picked to play on the left on Sunday. I had to check the team sheet, but there were tactical reasons for that which nearly paid off. If I'd have taken my chance, as I should have done, it would have been because I was on the left against a defender who was having such a tough time he was subbed.

"If we'd have equalised then, people would have been saying it was a master-stroke by the manager to play me against Boulahrouz. These are the fine lines we're dealing with in football.

Cack - it could have been a master-stroke to play Gonzalez against Boulahrouz!

I point-blank refuse to buy this, the only reason i'd put Gerrard on the left is to counteract a potent threat from the opposition! (And Zenden and Aurelio can do this anyway)

Gonzales has not adapted as quickly as we were hoping. Riise was injured, Aurelio has been patchy form wise. Gerrard was clearly under instructions to get up and around Boulahrouz and give him a hard time, and come in and shoot if he can, maybe you should replace Rafa as manager as you clearly know more about management and tactics than Rafa does

it is always possible that Rafa decided to play him on the left because he wanted to piss him off and give Chelsea a chance; you never know.

Basically he's playing a freerole. Just on the left rather than centrally. As it's a freerole, it doesn't matter. He could be a freeroling leftback and still be the same. FREE ROLE!

I was merely using Gonzalez as an example, hence the rolleyes e.g. It could have been a master-stroke to play Dudek/Garcia/Zenden/his six yo child on the left (if they had scored the winning goal).

Was wondering how long it would take for someone to play the - "why don't you be manager card!" If that's the case we should accept the manager's decisions, and the purpose of these boards are pretty limited.

Besides, i'm not adverse to playing Gerrard on the left in some games if injuries / the opposition necessitate it. But i'm totally against playing Gerrard on the left primarily as the initial quotes indicate!

I've read the stock quotes from Gerrard today backing Benitez, and i should point out i'm not saying Benitez is rubbish overnight. I'm merely making an argument against shifting Gerrard's primary starting role to the left. Because, in my opinion, it will be a catastrophic failure!

But he's not, well not really.

He has been given a licence to be more offensive at certain points of the game, but this doesn't equate to a free role per se.

He still has certain responsibilities. Since the start of the season we've pretty much been playing a rigid 4 across the middle. Wish we had the luxury of one of those toys that shows the players movement over the course of the game. If we did i'd bet my last buck that you'd see a lot more activity on the left channel from Gerrard in the Chelsea game.

I'll actually be happy if Gerrard played in the hole (free role) - as Gerrard's natural discipline and workrate means he'd put a shift in defensively regardless. And he'd finally have the central role he craves, albeit more advanced!

This role i'm talking about was the same role the McManaman played often, albeit free role on the right was his predominant position. He was given virtually a total free reign under Evans. Then we were effectively playing a 4312 formation or variations of it. Ultimately then we had little width (that and the CB were the bane of Evan's reign - we were so close at times ).

And finally given the emphasis Rafa put on wide play and the signings he made during the summer i'd deduct that 3 in the middle with another midfielder going walkies is in not really in Rafa's thoughts for this season.

Wide play from Gerrard from the left does not compute for me!! NO! NO! NO!

I was just busting your balls Bob.
But im still serious All we can do is wait and see how Gerrard performs in other games, as he said himself, there is a very thin line between him being a success there against the chavs and him not.

There is a reason i'd don't post often on football matters.

Gerrard could play on the left all season long and score say 13 goals, and play reasonably effectively - I've a feeling he may bag a hat trick from there tonight . Like Kopdan alluded to he could play in goals and probably do a job. However come the end of the season i'd still be there bleating on, "but just think how better he could have been".

I feel the fight inside of me dying - i've made my opinions fairly clear by now i'd have thought.

Don't use that, 'you should be manager line again though'. I bounced my keyboard repeatedly off the table in a fit of radgeness, and now i can't find the three key
