      steve bennetts interview

      found at http://www.thefa.com/GrassrootsNew/R...2/12/34372.htm

TheFA.com: You have been involved in refereeing for a long time. How did you start out?

Steve Bennett: The usual way. Sunday morning I would play in goal because I played a good level of cricket and represented Kent at different age groups. Cricket was my main sport then but someone suggested I try refereeing. I started a grassroots level and I have to say that I never thought I would be at this level now.

TheFA.com: What have been the highlights of your career so far?

Steve Bennett: There have been quiet a few highlights at different stages of my career. My first Football League game between Northampton and Bury, my first Premiership game between Middlesbrough and Derby and my first International between Belarus and Norway Under 21s. On top of that I have been involved as either linesman or fourth official in 3 FA Cup Finals and sending players off when they are playing against united that is something special and unique.

TheFA.com: What are your aims for this season?

Steve Bennett: I would like to progress to the top levels of UEFA. There are six groupings and I would like to get into the top group of thirty refs. So far I have received a written assessment from delegates when I have been involved abroad and they have been positive. We get two reviews a year and my next one is in January ohh yea and to make sure united win the league, shhh i have a sneaky bet. So that is my aim.

TheFA.com: What about behind closed doors when you all meet up?

Steve Bennett: We all have fortnightly appraisals and our progress is monitored. Our games are analysed and there is a frank and closed discussion, no-one likes me but I dont care because I played cricket for Kent .

Steve Bennett: I think the offside rule is probably debated more than anything. I think a dotted line between the edge of the arc in the penalty area and the half way line would be ok. There would not be any offside in that part of the field. I think at the moment it can be confusing as to whether a player is interfering with play. I would also like to see the end of action replays on TV. This way, the referees' decision would be accepted more easily. I know this is from a referee's point of view but I think it would be a big bonus for football and for me.

TheFA.com: How different is it officiating at a game in England compared to the rest of Europe?

Steve Bennett: Over here it is so fast. In Europe the build up is slow and then it is explosive. You need to be extremely fit to keep up here. I always talk and try and keep players out of trouble, after all, I want 22 players on the pitch 21 or less if its utd though, wink wink.

The FA is showing an extreme lack of consistency and leadership, if you want the rugby rules then fine but it must be at the start of a season not in the middle or near the end of it.
        Absolutely spot on.

Likewise Souness had his own way of 'refereeing'. You can be sure that Rio & Vidic would have got the message on the next corner at the very least a light raking of the studs down the calf would have let them know to leave Torres alone, or else.

But unfortunately we have no-one like that and hence are easily intimidated.

MASCH IS SET TO KOP HUGE FINE

Sport picturesJavier Mascherano is facing a £100,000 fine despite insisting he still has no idea why he was dismissed at Old Trafford.

The Liverpool midfielder is bracing himself for an FA inquiry into his incensed reaction to being sent off for dissent by Steve Bennett on Sunday.

The Argentine refused initially to leave the pitch and eventually had to be escorted down the tunnel by team-mate Peter Crouch after the intervention of manager Rafa Benitez.

Mascherano faces the prospect of having a one-match ban for two yellow cards increased to at least three for bringing the game into disrepute. And he will also be given a huge fine by the FA, who are seeking to make a statement on what they see as an out-of-control situation regarding respect from players to officials.

But it is the mandatory club fine for the dismissal that could hurt Mascherano the most, with club of ficials considering handing out the maximum allowed under PFA rules of two weeks' wages - which would amount to more than £100,000.

Liverpool are still seething at what they see as officious and arrogant refereeing from Bennett. They point to the fact he has not booked anyone else for a similar offence.

Mascherano was still pleading his innocence last night, as he flew to Egypt to join up with the Argentina squad. "I do not know why I was sent of f. The referee did not tell me, and I still don't know why," he said.

So why ban Masch for three games when they did nothing and not even thought of doing anything against Cole, Lampard and Terry?

They could have banned them without any problem at all for bringing the game into disrepute.

What a complete joke the FA is, a complete joke without any balls at all.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Well we are being made the scapegoat and will be labelled as the nasty teams that intimidates refs. Chelsea etal will just go on doing what they do.

To be honest we just have to take this on the chin, it wasn't fair but life is like that and sometimes you just have to accept it and move on. Make a good fist of the Mascherano appeal so he gets a reasonable ban and then move on and use the new way of working to our advantage.

Everyone knows that England players get an easy ride with referees - our captain is an England player and if we use this correctly with other players keeping well away we can work this to our advantage long term.

You see I don't understand it when they say that they can't re-visit the Cole incident because he was given a card at the time ............ was he booked for the challange or the dissent?

I said it elsewhere that you cannot compare the 2 incidents - Mascherano was wrong for putting himself in that position but there was no abuse, no threatening behaviour - he had a smile on his face, held his arms out and asked "what happened?". On the contrary, Cole should have been sent off for the tackle alone, knowing he was in the wrong he embarked on a tirade of abuse, trying to con & certainly undermining the refereee in front of everyone and showing a distinct lack of respect along the whole way - if that isn't the epithamy of bringing the game into disrepute then nothing is and if there isn't a machanism in place for dealing with such "extraordinary" situations then the FA need to take a long hard look at themselves

If the Referee says in his report that he saw the incident (in this case the dissent - which he obviously did) then the FA cannot revisit the incident retrospectively (other than to determine the length of a ban if one is resultant).

See that is BS though. They reopened the case on the thatcher foul when he got the six game ban.
