Ahead of tomorrow's Merseyside derby on which the future financial security of Champions League qualification might ultimately depend, Liverpool were shown by their co-owner George Gillett yesterday to be a club in the throes of boardroom civil war and utterly incapable of progress under the current American regime.

Gillett, whose distaste for co-owner Tom Hicks has been an open secret for months, launched a barbed attack on Hicks, in what might be interpreted as a deliberate attempt to force his business partner to sell the club to prospective buyers Dubai International Capital (DIC). Gillett described the two men's relationship as "untenable", suggested that Hicks' public utterances were dishonest and said the prospect of him selling a controlling 1% of his 50% share of the club to Hicks had prompted death threats from Liverpool fans. "We've tried to be co-operative [with Hicks]. We've tried to be supportive. But when your public persona is more important than the facts, it makes it difficult to have rational relationship," Gillett told Canada's Prime Time Radio.

Gillett's unexpected decision to speak out, having refused for months to so much as acknowledge an interview request, came three weeks after Hicks broke off all contact with DIC, having ended talks in Dubai over the prospective sale of Gillett's stake, which had promised to deliver Gillett a £40m profit.

It appears that Gillett may be attempting to force Hicks – whom he does name directly in his attack – to reconsider a sale, by further lowering his reputation among Liverpool fans. The pressure on Hicks is already mighty: there is no sign of the new investors he has said are lined up and the state of the US financial markets are hitting him hard.

Gillett served a reminder that DIC have the cash that Liverpool – and he – could badly use. "Lord knows they [DIC] have the money," he said. "And with oil prices going up every day, that's not an issue for them. They certainly have the history and they are fans of the club."

DIC sources expressed surprise last night at the comments from a man to whom the consortium remains close. But DIC feels the comments enhance their chances of ultimately buying the club.

If Hicks had any doubt about Liverpool fans' feelings for him, then Gillett dispelled them. He claimed that 95% of the 2,000 emails he says he receives a week from Liverpool are directed at "some of the comments made by my partner" – the revelation that Jürgen Klinsmann had been approached for Rafael Benitez's job presumably high among them. The prospect of selling "even one share of stock to my partner" (making Hicks Liverpool's majority shareholder) had prompted telephone death threats – he said – to him, his son Foster (the Americans' representative at Anfield for a time) and his daughter-in-law Lauren, whose continued unhappiness on Merseyside led to the couple's departure from the city.

"[Fans] don't want him to have controlling interest of this club," Gillett said of Hicks. "They don't want him to have any ownership of the club, based on what they're saying and sending to me... As a result of that, it has been a difficult time. We've received calls in the middle of the night, threatening our lives, death threats."

Gillett was careful to suggest that only 5% of the emails he receives say "go home Americans" and the lines of demarcation he drew between himself and Hicks might be seen as an exit strategy in which he will not be cast as a profiteer after the event.

Some of Gillett's utterances were puzzling. He suggested the death threats stemmed from his phone number being on fans' blog sites. No such publication is known. He also suggested, unconvincingly, that the threats had persuaded him not to sell any shares to Hicks.

Having not watched Liverpool since December and having been an anonymous figure apparently intent on cutting his losses, Gillett seems to intend to join the DIC offensive to make sure Hicks sells.

      100% agree

Thats what we are seeing now imo

Gillett spoke about people moving their chess pieces around, his interview was just that imo

However in this game you have 4 or 5 players Gillett, Hicks, DIC, the banks & the US Economy

Unfortunately for Hicks hes starting to look like General Custer

Especially for Hicks as he is in a leverage business and banks will be ****ting to lend him money, he will find it difficult to find partners as they will be worried about their public persona. DIC will be less affected as they are supported by the state.

This whole saga is starting to take over my life now. Every morning when I wake up I put BBC txt on to see if DIC have taken over or SSN is on to see if there's any news. My lunch breaks are dictated by the club I dearly love and I'm constantly seeing if any news has broken on the takeover.

I feel like I'm going to flip!!!

I know this sounds mad but maybe this whole takeover thing is what's needed to give the club the good kick up the arse it needs. We've been stuck in a ****ty mess for too ****ing long now.

Yes we're been made a laughing stock but isn't it good that so many different people are after our club, the fans included, this alone gives me enough optimisim for the future.

I sense that this whole sorry mess will soon be at an end and we can get on with things. We, LFC and the fans will soon back at the top!!!

I think you are right. At the end of this we will be in a much better place to challenge than we have been in the last 15 years.

Yeh man I can feel a strong challenge coming on next year. I'm sick of reading about our club being slagged off and told we're also rans year in year out it's getting on my tits.

Get DIC or share lfc in, get some stabilty and sort this whole ****ing mess out and let Rafa get on with the job of bringing home number 19......and hopefully start beating Utd in the process!

But you have to look at the media interest in our club, it's massive and it's increased even more so since the yanks took over so you can't really say that's it's just LFC fans who are interested.

I have mates who are Utd, Arsenal and bitters fans and they constantly ask me what's going on with Liverpool.

At the end of the day we are and will always be the biggest team in England, bigger even than Utd because of what we've achieved past and present. This is why the media are constantly on us, the manager and the owner. We're still the most loved country in the land and probably the world over. Even the media want us to succeed.

They only slate us because we're a ****ing mess and have something to slate.

                      Think big, think bigger.

No second choices anymore because we can't afford the first choice when DIC buy us.

The manager will be able to build his team without having to worry that much about the money.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Frankly i'm astonished Thicks hasn't come back with an official statement of his own, there is a direct question there to ask him now as a consequence of what GG said, a few questions really.

GG's assertion that it may be time to talk about 'buying', What will Hicks response be when asked about that, & the prospect of GG buying, GG has now personally brought it up, & in public.

Will Hicks now issue an...'I'll never sell my half to him or his mates either' type statement.

                            Stubborn Greedy Spiteful Bugger.

That is all speculation mate... All we know so far is that DIC would like to take us over, and would want to run the club for a profit. This does not tell us whether they will invest heavily or not!

Furthermore, it hardly tells us if we will be better off or not. Right now, most LFC fans (and myself included) are clinging on to the DIC hope, because the current owners are ****wits, but that does not mean that DIC will be better. DIC have never / nor will ever say "think big think bigger" about LFC - it is a slogan you have written so many times you might acutally believe it...

I would prefer by far that the shareliverpool idea could get underway, and could be set up like barca or real - unfortunatly I think that race is gone. It is to expensive now. The problem with G+H, DIC or whatever is that they are an INVESTMENT company, and henceforth in it for the profit. I am gutted we have ended up like this, might just be the alcohold talking, but for some reason I would rather have us being owned by Moores than G&H or DIC.

I would love to win the title mind you, but not at the expense of the instition liverpool has build up, and for some reason I feel that it is lost bit by bit as long as investors, no matter the name, are in charge...

The best solution now is to get rid of G&H, but I would love to see the club get back to business with true pasionate people behind it...

It's DIC and Dubai that use the slogan, think big, think bigger. It wasn't me that imagined that one up.
