To be honest, I'd rather we were going into the summer with the news being that money could be tight, rather than with promises of Snoogy Doogy etc etc. With the ownership situation, unless something changes that is, we can't expect to have a massive budget, and teams have been trying to screw us for cash too much the last few years. In terms of numbers anyway, if not quality, I can see how we might have to sell before we buy.

Will earn us close to 40 million that can be used to buy one superstar striker and go a long way towards a world class right winger

Nothing wrong with needing to sell first if it means we get rid of players that won't help us win the title.
Hmmm. I can't see us selling all the strikers apart from Torres to start with. I think you're being over-optimistic there. Also, bit harsh to include Leto, poor lad hasn't even got a passport at the moment, if that gets sorted I'm sure rafa will give him another year at least.

      Carson £6m-£8m if were lucky
Kuyt and Alonso wont be sold
      Pennant £4-5m
      Voronin £1-2 m
      Crouch £7m
      Other fringe players £3-4m

Round about £20m and thats pushing it
      Perhaps a little stingy.

Kuyt won't be sold, I agree. Alonso won't UNLESS he genuinely wants to leave, or we get a very good offer. Replacing him could cost as much as he'd bring in anyway.

Although we do look to have some good prospects in the ressies, only Insua looks like he's of the stature to break through next year. Nemeth perhaps, but there's no way he'll play a big part, talented undoubtedly but he is still a kid really. So we'd probably have to buy to replace most of what we sell, which complicates things.

Riise will go. I think we'd get £4m easily for him. Newcastle I reckon.
      Pennant. £4m.
Crouch. £9. I'd think there could be a few clubs in for him, he's one of the most obviously high profile English strikers available in the league.
      Carson. Lets say £7m. Spurs.
Voronin, Guthrie, Finnan & other fringe players ~5m total

Best part of £30m there. Never works out like that anyway, what with paying players off, agents etc, but that wouldn't be outrageously unrealistic imo.

Assume Insua replaces Riise, Carson and Guthrie are obviously irrelevant, that would leave us with Pennant, Crouch, Voronin and Finnan (included as Rafa obviously wants a new rb and Arbeloa will stay) to replace with better quality.

      Could be done.

What's all the working capital we took out on top of the other loans being used for?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Ballague also called the Torres transfer way ahead.

That interview Rafa gave the other day was with him too, so at least he gets more out of our manager than most.

I dont think we can raise anywhere near enough to make us genuine title contenders by sales alone, so I expect us to be challenging for 3rd again next season without.

The problem this season has been that the squad is to big, some players simply didn't have a fair chance to get match fit when they play.

Pennant, Crouch, Voronin, Riise, Kewell and players out on loan like Guthrie and Carson don't even need to be replaced.

We would still have a big enough squad after we sold them.

              That is a start.

Then it comes down to after that replacing player by player and make the squad better.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

We'd struggle with only 2 strikers on our books- 1 of which has struggled for gaols this season.

Please dont start chuntering anout Nemeth FFS.

Nemeth is a better option than Crouch because he is much more mobile and that means that he is a better back up to Torres.

He wouldn't play that much and would be eased in in the same way as Babel for example. He isn't that young anymore, 19 now, he need to play more competitive football than he do now.

Either you ease him in or loan him out. Insua is in the same situation.

I said NOT to chunter about him FFS.

Snot necessarily about direct replacement tho is it?

We have 7 subs next year, so he'll get more experience anyways.

What if Torres gets injured? We'll really struggle for goals undoubteldly but at least we need someone who can do a job, not a rookie

He definitely said NOT to chunter about Nemeth Tommy, I saw it too

As I said above, I think Insua could come in as backup to Aurelio, no problem. Nemeth is another matter. I'd not be adverse to starting to put him on the bench in the latter half of next year, but the lad's only been here a few months, there's no point in rushing it especially if he is that talented. He'll be ready when he's ready.

You could maybe argue for Nemeth replacing Voronin in the squad, and then replacing Crouch with a genuine option to partner Torres. That would leave us with Torres, MrX, Babel and Nemeth as forward options. Mmmmm. Perhaps that'd be enough, especially if we keep playing 1 up top.

We've actually had a remarkably injury free season overall. We can't just shift out 8 squad players, many of whom have played games this season, and not replace most of the numbers. That would be foolish in the extreme.

Selling Crouch wouldn't give us any extra transfer money, because we'll need to sign a replacement for him, unless you can name me someone as good as him for £5m? Otherwise, we won't make a real profit. You can't play a whole season with only Torres, Kuyt and Nemeth as your strikers. Better give him a new contract.

                            Getting rid of the following:

                            Carson- £7m
                            Finnan- Peanuts
                            Riise- £5m
Guthrie- £3m (would keep him personally)
                            Pennant- £5m
                            Kewell- free
                            Voronin- Peanuts

Will give us about £20m. Add the regular budget of £15m-£20m we always have every summer, and you've got £35m-£40m to spend.

                            On what?
                            Two top full backs
                            Two top "wingers"
Some kids and possibly a back up GK.

                            Not a lot of money.

would give the kids a miss unless there's owt outstanding going on. we have hundreds & need immediate 1st teamers.

1 Quality right back with attacking instincts

1 Top quality wide attacking player

                                1 more genuinely dangerous striker.

Crouch will be off, I think it's guaranteed really that he'll want to go, and another season of not playing could see his value drop below what we paid. At the moment we might still make a profit on what we paid.

3 class players are about all any side can ever expect from a summer. I think anyone else brought in will be more of the Arbeloa/Benayoun type purchases
