Liverpool are arguably still the most famous team in England, despite what them down the road say (the last time I checked, Liverpool still had a few more European Cups anyway). However, this season, whilst United have already added a League Cup to their cabinet, Liverpool have been languishing in the Premier League, and got knocked out of the Champions League. However, do not fret Liverpool fans, as you do not walk alone. It appears that whilst you may not be top of the Premier League, you are well represented with REAL fans in celebrity circles. Here are Liverpool’s top ten celebrity fans…

1. Dr. Dre

Apparently Dr. Dre became a huge fan of Liverpool after becoming good friends with John Barnes after the ‘Anfield Rap’ was recorded. I cannot confirm that Dre actually worked on the ‘Anfield Rap’, but Dre did confirm that his favourite player was John Barnes in an interview published on the Liverpool FC website.

The production values are still all there to be heard in the ‘Anfield Rap’, and so I personally chose to believe that Dre produced it in 1988.

Dre is clearly a man of principle however, because how he hasn’t ordered a drive by on G. Neville is beyond me…

2. Elvis Costello

Costello was born in London, but Christened in Birkenhead and is a devoted Liverpool fan. However, this might not have necessarily been the case were his father, an Everton fan, more insistent.

“My dad’s an Evertonian, but he took me to Goodison and they lost 4-0 and he took me to Anfield and they won 5-1, and when you’re a kid you go with the winning side.”
Costello is considered today to be one of the most influential and popular singer/songwriters in modern music. Costello recorded his first album “My Aim Is True” while on holiday from his job as a computer operator in 1977. The album was a smash hit in England and landed Costello a worldwide distribution deal with Columbia records. Costello then set up his backing group “The Attractions” and is still writing and recording today.

It’s a shame he was never asked to lend a hand to the ‘Anfield Rap’…

3. DJ Spooney

Spoony is a well known Liverpool fan, despite being born in Hackney, East London, and can currently be heard on the Five Live phone-in show.

Real name Johnathan Joseph, ‘Spoony’ shot to fame whilst working on Kiss 100, where he became a member of the Dreem Teem with Mikee B and Timmi Magic. The Dreem Team then took UK garage to Radio 1, before Spoony quit Radio 1 for Five Live.

Spoony was recently involved in controversy after being arrested and cautioned after an altercation with an ex-lover. Spoony admitted grabbing the woman by her throat during a heated row at her home in Essex, but avoided further police action.

We can only assume that Spoony is suffering owing to Liverpool’s disappointing season, and lashed out accordingly…

4. Mike Myers

Canadian born Mike Myers, star of Waynes World and Austin Powers, is apparently a life-long Red owing to his parents. Myers was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1963, but his parents Eric and Bunny hail from the Old Swan area of Liverpool.

Myers told LFCToronto.com:

“I was the only kid in Toronto to wear an olive-green Nehru jacket and support Liverpool FC.”
5. Samuel L. Jackson

Jackson started following the Reds after filming Brit flick The 51st State on location in Merseyside. In an interview with The Word magazine in January 2009, Jackson admitted:

‘I put my Liverpool gear on every now and again, and people say ‘”what the hell is that?”‘

‘I went to Anfield to see the derby game when I was there, against Everton? That was cool. I enjoyed that.’
6. Billy Bob Thornton, Angelina Jolie

Right, now although they are not together anymore (I think Jolie is now married to some bloke called Brad) the couple were arguably Liverpool’s most famous celebrity couple. Billy Bob confessed his love for Merseyside and the Reds in an interview with Empire magazine:

Empire: Is it true you’re a big Liverpool fan?

Thornton: Yeah, of the soccer team and the place. I love Liverpool…. When my band played the Cavern I met Gerry Marsden and saw Liverpool play Juventus. I love that town, they’re my kind of people.
However, it gets better. Possibly the most beautiful women in the world, Angelina Jolie, has continued to follow her former husband’s team, and admits that her son Maddox, is a huge Liverpool fan and ‘only wants to play for Liverpool’. There are various pictures of Maddox wearing Liverpool hats/merchandise, but it’s a bit weird posting pictures of celebrity kids. So instead, here’s a lovely picture of Angelina and Billy Bob. Hurrah!

7. Clive Owen

Star of King Arthur, Closer, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Sin City to name but a few, English export Clive Owen is one of the biggest names in Hollywood… and he’s also a Red.

In an interview with the Guardian in February 2009, Owen shed some light on his obsession with Liverpool. He recalled how during the filming of ‘The Boys are Back’ his two children visited wearing Liverpool shirts because they thought:

‘”Dad will love this!”‘
Further, last year Owen was complaining to anybody who’d listen -even Guardian journalists-about “frustrating draws” and Liverpool’s failure to perform to their ability.

‘”I’ve been hurting this week. Seriously. I’m absolutely not joking. I had to talk to a friend last night on the phone just to offload.
“I have to be able to get it [Liverpool matches] in my trailer…They know it’s important to me.”’
8. Craig Charles

Star of Red Dwarf and Coronation Street, Craig Charles used to go to Melwood as a child and collect autographs from his childhood heroes Kevin Keegen and co. Charles recalls in an interview with the Telegraph that:

“My first game was Liverpool v Middlesbrough. We won 2-0 and Souness had a big fight with Jimmy Case. The first time I went to the Kop I hit my head on a barrier and got knocked out. The crowd carried me to the front where the Red Cross were. I got a brilliant view.”
Right, now I’ve tried, but I can’t do it. I have to say it… Craig Charles smoked crack out of an old drinks can in the back of a taxi and asked the driver to buy him porn. Phew. Despite this slight misdemeanor, Craig Charles seems a nice enough bloke, and his redeeming quality should undoubtedly be his love of the Reds.

9. Jimmy Tarbuck

Tarbuck is still known to frequent Anfield to this day, and can be seen here enjoying Birmingham City draw 2-2 with the Reds at Anfield in November last year.

Jimmy Tarbuck, school boy friend of John Lennon and all-round comedic genius, is one of Britain’s longest serving comedians. Tarbuck is the son of a bookmaker, and was born in Liverpool on 6th February 1940. He left school at 15 and started work as a garage mechanic soon after, before eventually pursuing a career in Comedy.

10. John Peel

John Peel was an English disc Jockey, radio presenter and journalist. Upon his death in 2004, he was the longest serving DJ on BBC Radio 1, broadcasting regularly from 1967 onwards. Aside from having an eclectic taste in music, Peel was often the first to give new music airtime, for example, Peel was the first to broadcast psychedelic rock, reggae, hardcore, British hip hop and dance music.

In an interview with Radio and Television station B92 the late great John Peel proved his love for Liverpool by confessing an unnatural hatred of Manchester United.

“Obviously, as a man who has frankly hated Manchester United, I’m sure there will be a lot of people watching this who support Manchester United…At the school I went to I was the only Liverpool supporter and I think everyone else, except for one boy who didn’t like football, supported Manchester United.”
Well there you have it. Liverpool have some rather blooming huge Hollywood stars supporting the Reds, as well as locals like Tarbuck, Charles and Peel. However, if you think you know of more celebrity supporters, feel obliged to add to the list at your own discretion.

THE crisis at Liverpool Football Club appears to have reached as far as the American hit TV series Prison Break – and there is doubt whose side actor Dominic Purcell is on.

Purcell, Lincoln Burrows in the hit series, is a Wirral lad by birth and pays keen attention to Liverpool’s fortunes, despite moving to Australia at a young age before going to America.

He has now been quoted as saying he is worried the off-pitch problems with Tom Hicks and George Gillett are now affecting performances on it.

"I'm hoping Rafa Benitez is going to go," said Wallasey-born Purcell, 35.

"He's an idiot. I don't understand what he has against Peter Crouch."

While Purcell's views may not exactly echo those of the majority of the Kop, he does have a football heritage.

"I'm not all that well versed on the politics at Liverpool, but my uncle Peter played for them in the ’70s," he added.

Hollywood superstar Samuel L Jackson refused to hide his love for Liverpool as he flashed off his replica Reds shirt in a public display of affection at the annual ESPY awards in Los Angeles.

The actor - who is understood to have a clause in all of his film contracts that allow him breaks during production to play golf - proudly paraded his Liverpool jersey on the red carpet at the star-studded sports ceremony, which he hosted on Wednesday night.

Jackson has been a devout Anfield fan ever since he starred in the 2001 Brit flick The 51st State, shot on location in Merseyside, where his character Elmo McElroy takes in a Liverpool-Manchester United clash during the drug drama's cilmax.
