Carlsberg Sponsorship of the Leppings Lane End

    Afternoon guys.

Apologies if this has been raised before, this is my first post on here, and I've skimmed the board but can see nothing on it.

I'm a season ticket holder at Anfield, but I live in Sheffield at the minute due to work. My missus is from Sheffield and her dad is a Wednesday fan. As he can't use his season ticket again this year, he offered it to me, so I went along to the game against Plymouth on Monday.

Now, during the game, I looked over to the Leppings Lane stand - it was weird being there the day before the anniversary. The thing is, I noticed that the stand is now sponsored.....by Carlsberg. The Leppings Lane end of the ground is now called the Carlsberg stand, and is proudly sponsored by Sheffield Wednesday's official beer.

I can't decide if that's appropriate, or even decent, of a company that we've had an association with for so long. Especially one that trries to foster good relations with the fans.

Thoughts? I've got a picture, and I'm willing to write to the club and Carlsberg about it, I'm just not sure if I should. I'm trying to think what the club would have said if Carlsberg had approached them about it first. Would they have said anything?

    Very interesting, thanks for posting/sharing.

Not sure where I stand on this, to be honest.........
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I don't see anything wrong with it to be honest.

That's just my personal opinion like.

It would be unfair on Sheffield Wednsesday as a club to expect big sponsors to pull out of advertising on the stand because of its history.

I'm struggling to see the point in this to be honest, the stand wasn't at fault back in '89.

I'm not sure where I stand either to be honest, but I do think that at best it's a missed opportunity to do something that brings the fans together.

I know SWFC's lack of speed in building a monument to the 96 caused a lot of upset amongst our fans - and I imagine the boycott will still be in place should we ever play Wednesday again.

And for the record, I'm not calling SWFC into question, I'd just be interested to know the process that led to Carlsberg sponsoring that particular part of the ground.

I think he means that our sponser has it's name scrawled on the Leppings Lane which is the scene of our darkest hour and maybe deserves to be called something in tribute to the 96 or nothing at all out of respect.

I can understand where the poster is coming from but as already mentioned respect and sentiment come second in the game to money like it or not so you can't really blame Wednesdays for maximising their commercial revenue.

Nobody is blaming the stand, but the fact remains that 96 of our fellow reds never came back out of there.

Do you not find it strange that the same name we hawk on our club shirts proudly sits atop the location of our darkest day?

I realise you can't stop advertising, but I'd expect more (at least a consultation with LFC) from a company that we have shared such a long relationship with.

I share your sentiment on this.

Not sure where I stand on this either, though I'd be interested to know Carlsberg's marketing departments thought process.

how do we know that this hasn't happened?

don't see it an issue TBO - if it was anything related to that paper then yes but SW have to survive financially

I think the original poster was looking at it from a Carlsberg point of view ie. that they have their name plastered on our shirts and that end. I must say that I am less than comfortable with it.

For the last time, this thread is not anti-SWFC, so please can we move on from that.

Lest anyone forget, Hillsborough, as with most football grounds, has four stands.

just doesnt seem right in fairness

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

A fair question, should be easy enough to clear up if the club is contacted.

But, I'm not sure the club would have said yes if they had been consulted, not without inviting comment from HJC etc.
