I thought the ref had an excellent game but he got the Sami pen wrong, and it was made even stranger by the fact he put the whistle to his mouth to give it, then changed his mind.

    Now why was that?

Loved Carragher coming out and being honest and not making excuses. I'm over the game now and looking forward to next season

Was it against Barcelona years ago when the ref blew for a penalty to them at the Kop end then gave a corner instead?

        Roma. The ref bottled it.

What a bunch of foolish musings.

Yeah, refs often start to whistle and then suddenly stop when someone is fouled in the box...

Do you really, truly, honestly think that was because he was crooked? Could it not just be that he thought about it, and then changed his mind.

I seem to remember a ref doing something similar in our favour against Roma when we won the Uefa in 2001.

He would believe it because he 'predicted' it ... and got the right result to boot.

It could be, but the actions of the ref leave the door open for questions to be asked.

The ref vs Roma was purely useless and it happened 7 years ago, which shows you how rare these kind of things occur.

Well there was also the Tiago handball incident where Mike Riley put the whistle in his mouth and then decided not to give it. I still clearly remember JC shouting "you put the ****ing whistle in your mouth" But yeah it is pretty rare.

I agree it does make you think, but I really don't believe that there was anything untoward about it. If the officials were bent, then they wouldn't have disallowed Essien's goal I guess.

Dont get me wrong, i'm not categorically saying they were crooked, it's just something to ponder. It's been and gone now anyway, and i've more or less got over it.

The problem is, the referee has to be strong inside an hostile atmosphere and it's never easy when there's as much pressure. That's why Rafa was banging on it before the game ... just to put pressure on him and alleviate the would be 'not in our favour' decisions ... But it hasn't served us well.

He was at the Holocaust remembrance from what I understand which explains him not attending the Man U and Liverpool games.
