A week after sacking football pundit Rodney Marsh for making a tasteless joke about the Asian tsunami, Sky Sports have sacked Frank McLinktock and been reprimanded by the media watchdog, Ofcom, over another presenter who used the word n*gger on an earlier edition of the same show.

The incident, in which former Arsenal player McLintock likened the situation at Tottenham Hotspur to that in Agatha Christie's 1939 crime novel Ten Little Niggers, attracted nine complaints.

When McLintock made the reference on the phone-in programme You're On Sky Sports on November 15, in connection with the latest managerial departure at Spurs, both he and Marsh appeared to be stifling giggles.

Upholding the complaints, Ofcom said it was satisfied there was no racist intent behind the use of the phrase. "Nevertheless the word 'n*gger' is one of the most offensive and it should only be used where there is clear editorial justification. The use of the title in this context was not justified," it said, adding that the reaction of the panellists and the lack of an immediate on air apology compounded the error.

The incident was one in a series of controversial remarks made recently by football pundits that have sparked complaints. Last week, Marsh was sacked for joking that David Beckham had said he would not sign a contract with Newcastle after what the Toon Army did to Asia. Ron Atkinson was fired last year by ITV for racist comments about Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly following a live Champions League broadcast.
