Aurelio out for the season: Riise, Arbeloa or Insua?

aurelio is a good player, we just can't seem to keep him fit for long enough to get up to speed. he was looking good last year when his knee went and this year has been far too stop start for him.

My fear is that he in injury prone ala kewell or woodgate etc and therefore we should not rely on him to be our first choice left back. Insua needs to be eased in and when Riise is sold in the summer we may need to either risk aurellio with insua or buy another left back or even possibly have a choice of arbeloa, aurelio and insua at left back.

as for next week for me its simple - arbeloa to left back, finnan right back and riise put down!

I can see why Rafa wanted a one for one replacement rather than to completely reorganise the defence. I really think that Riise isn't as bad as he is getting made out to be. However the margins in big games are always small and his lack of composure did cost us. It is a shame as I think he has been a good player for us but his deficiencies in our current way of playing are very apparent and neither Kuyt or Babel are the ideal person to have in front of him in those situations (Babel doesn't help enough defensively and Kuyt doesn't have the pace or touch to deal well with the Riise hoofed clearances and keep the ball away from him).

Mate, I understand what you're saying, but IMO Riise is so bad as to warrant a re-organisation of the defence in such a massive game where the tactics are so scrupulously and meticulously planned. There are certian players who are suh a liability when tehy play for us, not only cant they not do a passable job but they actually make us a weaker and poorer team. Riise is in that bracket, a long with Kewell and of late Pennant and Voronin.

We deride Kuyt for his lack of technique, pace, control etc, yet he keeps on pulling it out the bag in games like this. Riise on the hand proves to be a liabilty. No place for him in games of this magnitude where one error can be so costly. Time for him to go.

Riise on the other hand, has been under-performing for over 2 years. No longer good enough

Insua doesnt have the experience to help us at this time

Which means Riise will just have to do till the end of the season

and thats the dilemma. as for riise get rid, never play him again and in the meantime play arbeloa at left back and finnan right back

Great shame- Fabs has been a real bonus of late & I knew that when he went down, that was it for him this season - and we'd suffer for it at some stage.

I was screaming for Arbs to be put left & Finn brought on, but I think this JAR castigating is a little futile- that couldve happened to anyone- it was a freak. That doesnt mean I dont see the limitations of JAR, just saying in the context we are discussing it, that whilist it was inexplicable to go for the header, it could have happened to anyone. It couldve ****zed off anyone that was there into the back of the net.

I dont see how it is helpful to scapegoat, we just need it right. For the CL I'd go:

Finn- Carra- Skrtel-Arbs.

THe CBs were ace last night & Sami, whislt still brilliant, is sometimes exposed against the very best.

maybe we cannot rely on him to play lots of games, but i think as a squad member and on the bench he could be a fantastic asset. similar to hyppia next year 10-20 games tops and on the bench for the rest.

How come everyone here thinks Rafa is a superb Manager & Tactician , & yet these same fans all KNEW John Arne was going to cost us the game, & Rafa didn't. They KNEW as soon as he came on too they say, not hindsight.

Was it not just one of those footballing gaffs, that players with two good feet & far superior skill could, & have done in the past & will do in the future. **** Happens. He is only as good as he is, & what he is, is what we can/could afford.

Anywho, I would go for Riise still think he is better than arbeloa on the left. Insua is to young and inexperienced to jump in at stamford.

Is insua registered for the CL??
