Pepe Reina has confirmed that he would be likely to leave Liverpool if Rafa Benitez quit the club in the summer.


Speaking to The Guardian, Reina explained that he "couldn't imagine being at Liverpool without Rafael Benítez."


The Spanish goalkeeper was brought to Anfield by his compatriot and has warned that he would have no qualms in following Benitez to another destination.


"My contract is with Liverpool but, if the coach moves and there is the possibility of me joining him, if he coaches another team, of course I would think about that."


Benitez's long-term future at Anfield remains in doubt, with the club's ownership squabble still yet to be settled.

Villareal didn't exactly had much choice after we paid the buy out clause in his contract and Barca had Valdes in their youth team at the same time. Only one of them could stay.

I rate Reina as the most complete keeper in the world. He is also one of our best attacking options.

And my point was, if he was a true true world class keeper as you lot all seem to think, then surely 2 clubs just couldn't have missed this MASSIVE potential!!

There's loads of better keepers about, ones that don't cost the earth and will mature into genuines world class players. Wait, I'm playing Chammy Manager.

i think anyone who says pepe is easiloy replacable does not understand football.

Being a keeper isnt just about shot stopping. Which he does very well
Its not just about coming for crosses. this is his weakest point
Its not just about being comanding. he does well
Its not just about giving the defense confidence. he undoubtedly does this
Its not just about mental strength.. he has this in spades
Its not just about good distribution. best in the league for this
Its not just about almost being a sweeper. he does this very well

its about all of that. the reason its hard to replace pepe is that while lots of keepers are good at one or two of the attributes required not many are good over a breadth of them.

Given is just gone 32 this month. At the prime of his goalkeeping years so they say (30-35 a keepers best years). Legend of a keeper.

Shay Given? :laugh: That's a joke right? My Geordie mate rates Steve Harper above Given.
The only keepers better than Pepe are IMO Cech, Casillas, and possibly Buffon. There may be one or two others but I cant think of them. Anyway, we've no chance of getting any of those. I reiterate, losing Pepe would be disatrous

People saying they'd not be too disappointed if Pepe left, perhaps they can recommend a realistic alternative. I have in mind probably 2-3 keepers who are better than him, but none of them are acquirable. Losing him would be a disaster in my book.

Agree with all of that. Will add that if Rafa goes Pepe will go too. Rafa needs a sweeper keeper to make his system work. Pepe is perfect for him, hence why Pepe said as much. I expect Reina to be Rafa's keeper for 10 years.

I really hope those 10 years are at Anfield.

LOL, aren't opinions wonderful as for me, he'd be one I wouldn't take! (although one of his mistakes which cost me a bet is fresh in my mind, followed by another shocker not long after and I've only seem him live about 5 times!)


I know I'll get shot for this but Given would be ideal. Not because I'm biast but because being Irish, I've been watching him closely and he is truly fantastic IMO, ask Thierry Henry his opinion too

Given is a gr8 keeper but in no department is he better that Pepe. Very similar keepers actaully. Given seems to have injury problems though.

If Pepe said the above then he's a bit of a ****. What's he going to do? follow him around and only play for clubs if Rafa is in charge? What if Rafa ends up somewhere with a better keeper - what will the big baby do then?? He's lost some respect for those comments.

No funny that, 3 years in a row, we've scored something like 116 goals this season so..........(thinks for a bit)
Decent defence + scoring lots of goals now = Rafa must get the sack if you read some people's deluded views.
