    Babel out of the Euro's

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -Netherlands winger Ryan Babel is out of the European Championship after injuring his ankle in training on Saturday morning.

Babel tore ankle ligaments and a scan showed that the injury will sideline the 21-year-old player for several weeks, the Dutch soccer association said.

Coach Marco van Basten did not immediately announce a replacement.

The injury came a day before the Netherlands plays Wales in its last friendly match before the European Championship.

Van Basten's team plays world champion Italy on June 9 in Berne to open its Euro 2008 campaign. It also plays World Cup runner up France and Romania in what is considered the toughest qualifying group at the tournament.

        ****.

If it's not too serious a summer off might do him good, but don't want him to miss the start of pre-season.

Gutted for the lad though missing a big international tournament.

Big shame for the lad. I thought he could have had a decent tournament.

Marca are reporting that he's torn his achilles tendon. I hope I misread that because the other option is a tear in his achilles tendon.

FFS we're skint and one of our best players might for out for a while.

Panic over - ankle ligaments confirmed by the BBC.

Have a break come back refreshed and tear rio ferdinand a new arsehole when you're skinning him.

Don't care - as long as he's fit, rested amnd raring to go for us in Pre-season. One less of ours that can get seriously injured in the next 4 weeks.

Pre-season is meant to start beginning of July. He won't be ready for it so I'd take an educated guess and say that he'll miss the start of the season.

If he's torn (i.e. wrenched) his ankle ligaments - he should be ready in 4-6 weeks which is mid-July.

The original report said he'd "tore ankle ligaments and a scan showed that the injury will sideline the 21-year-old player for several weeks"

If he's snapped his ankle ligaments on the other hand......

It's a shame for him to miss out on the tournament.

Good for us as he will be back in time for next season.

Saying that he may be physically fit but mentally he might be quite down over the whole thing.

                            Gutted for him.
