    Window of opportunity?

Just a thought really but if (I know it is a big if) this summer could be a really great chance to close the gap on the teams above us. All three seem to one degree or another to have problems - United with Ronaldo, Arsenal with seemingly half their team wanting off and already having lost the instrumental Flamini, Chelsea having no manager. In previous seasons Rafa has been quick to point out that speed of doing business is decisive but this year we are the only big team to be seemingly making strides with first team signings.

Obviously in a few weeks (well after the Euros anyway) things could look very different but it feels good to be able to be optimistic at this time of year.

I was thinking about that earlier, but quite easily, a fan of the other top 3 could be saying the same thing except replace their team with "Liverpool have their ownership problems and don't know how much transfer money they will have"?

this is exactly what I was thinking, reading all those stories about Ronaldo being off, Adebayor having agreed a deal with AC Milan and Mourinho making eyes at Chelsea players....

Let's see where we are at the end of the summer though. United might have £100m to spend on new players!

But it's lloking good at the moment....

Thats true but we have had those problems last summer too and before that have been scraping about for money without the youth resources of Arsenal.

it is obviously only an opportunity if we have the resources to exploit it but even if we have to rely on sales I think we could make substantial progress this year.

Certainly a few months ago we were facing a situation where United and Chelsea had stability, a better squad and more money and now they are not in such an unassailable position as they were. Which gives me hope.

I would probably add that the debts at Roma, relegation of Zaragoza and piss poor performance of Valencia also mean that there are a number of top players about for decent money which is bound if not to affect us directly have a knock on effect in terms of some of our continental targets.

No one who has a player in Euro 2008 will sell now.

My feelings, this time last summer, were that of optimism with the new owners on board hoping they would dig deep and show us the money as promised. It didn't quite happen how we had hoped, but signing Torres & Babel has stepped us up a gear.

This summer is the once and only time I have EVER felt we are only a couple of players away from having a title winning team. But yes, all the factors of the other big 3 teams you mention could have negative effects on their performance next season?

I'll be happy when the Euro's are over and Nando is back in his Liverpool kit safe & sound, i worry that if any top player is to get injured it will, knowing our luck be him. God forbid.

That's a plea big man if your listening......... please God, FORBID FORBID!!!!! Get the lad home fighting fit & raring to go.

And I'm thinking Man City will strengthen, Everton will, Tottenham will be better...

I'm looking at seventh unless the Americans give Sir Rafa lots of cash to spend.
                    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

True mate, but there is no harm in testing the water

Really we could be trying to get both barry and bentley, if we really want them we should be doing what we can to get them in now rather than miss out

At least none of the English players we have been sniffin around will be increasin their value over the summer

It's going to be a long summer transfer window and I guarantee by the end of it Man Utd and Chelsea will have significantly outspent us again, as well as probably another couple of teams such as Man City, Arsenal and maybe Tottenham.

As you say though at least we appear to have some of our first choice signings in place before the Euros which could be a very wise move.
