    the stirrings of premiership hope...

    1. scum will be weakened by the loss of ronaldo.
    2. on the basis of the way portugal defended last night - and the exodus of players like carvalho, lampard and especially drogba - chelsea will be weakened.
    3. the direction arsenal will go in is hard to predict.
    4. we should have more strength in depth and maybe even one more match winning champagne signing.

we'll finish above chelsea - scolari may not even make it to the end of the season.

we should have the beating of arsenal at home at least at this stage.

no matter who scum sign to replace ronaldo, their system will have to adapt.

we'll challenge for first next season.

    Love the optimism.

This is going to be our year.

Some positive and optimistic points there. Let's be cautious and realistic also. Once we clear the dead wood and bring in some new quality players, the question is will they help us bridge the gap? Two wins over scum last year and we would have been champions!

Chelsea would have been champions with Arse second, us third and the Mancs 4th mate. Sorry I'm quite the pedant at times.

We have a great spine and two or three great attacking signings will make us very hard to beat. But being linked with Milner is not going to take us forward.
Oh the man is a midfield maestro
and his passes are sooo delightful

I don't think selling ronaldo will have as big an impact on united as most people like to think

granted he scored a phenomenal amount of goals but surely with the amount of money being talked about he can be replaced.. in my opinion if they find a half decent replacement for him, a new right back to replace that inbred Neville and an out an out striker. Then unfortunately its going to be hard to stop them!!

could be a testing time for whiskey nose though.

Looks like Chelsea will have unlimited funds once again, and if arsenal lose Adebayor then it will be interesting to see who will replace him. Crouch

I tell you what though, if we only sign Gaz Baz and Milner I will not hold any hopes for next season.

totally agree with you every year I have no doubt we will challenge, this year with the Olympics though its going to be as tough as ever! especially with are inability to start strong (not including last year)

19 is far away though i can feel it

Look at it this way. We finished 11 pts behind last season, but drew 13 games compared with the mancs 6. Convert 7 of those draws into wins and you have 14 extra points right there - and that doesn't even require any better performance against the top 3...

I think there is plenty of room for optimism

Ronaldo is nigh on impossible to replace IMO. Any player who scores over 40 goals individually is going to be. Man U can only play 11 men at one time and taking Ronaldo out of the equation means that they are going to have to pitch in with a lot more goals collectively.

I'd say they'd be doing well to find a player for his role who is capable of scoring half the goals he scored last season and I think they will really struggle to build on what they had without him in the side.

The problem is we need the fire power to convert those draws in to wins, how often can we rely on Torres and Gerrard.

Another thing is this is Torres 'difiificult' 2nd season and many Premiership teams will now know what he's about and try formulate a plan to stop him.
                              We come not to play.
