Babels speedy recovery ends up costing us

Babel looks to be selected for the olympics after his recovery ahead of schedule:

Rafa Benitez rage over Ryan Babel Olympics call

Jul 9 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today bemoaned the likely loss of Ryan Babel for the start of the new season - even though the winger has now recovered from an ankle injury picked up on international duty.

Babel was due to return to training at Melwood today having missed Euro 2008 through a ligament tear suffered during the build up to the tournament.

But having carefully managed his recuperation and got him back to fitness ahead of schedule, Liverpool face the prospect of losing Babel for the opening games of the new season as Holland intend to pick the 21-year-old for their Olympic Games squad.

If selected, Babel will join team mates Lucas, Javier Mascherano and possibly Emiliano Insua at the Games in Beijing.

Though delighted to have Babel back in action ahead of schedule, the Reds boss is angry that Holland are set to deprive him of the ex-Ajax man’s services when he feels he would be better served playing for Liverpool.

Benitez said: “Obviously, we are really pleased that Ryan is coming back to training because he is an important player for us and he has worked hard to recover from the injury he suffered with Holland.

“But we are really worried because after getting him fit again it is likely that we could lose him again if he is selected for the Olympics. This is a big problem – we prepare him and then he goes away with the national team.

“This season is very important for him. In his first season he was settling in but this time he has more experience and we are looking for him to give something from the beginning so it is really important for him to start working with his team.”

Should Babel go to Beijing he will miss Liverpool’s opening league games away at Sunderland and at home to Middlesbrough, as well as the third round qualification tie for the Champions League.

Benitez admitted: “This is a strange pre-season because we have to wait for players to return from the Euros at the start and then at the end we are going to lose players to the Olympics.”

Meanwhile, Peter Crouch is set to complete his £11m move to Portsmouth.

Once that move goes through Benitez will step up his attempts to bring in reinforcements with a resolution to the Gareth Barry saga topping his agenda. Diego Cavalieri has undergone a medical and should complete his £3m move to Anfield within days.

Benitez admitted he would have liked to have been able to keep Crouch but knows he cannot hinder the striker’s ambition to play regular first team football, particularly with Pompey having made such a lucrative offer.

He said: “We know we will miss him but you can't stop a player who wants to play every week. He understands that with Torres here and Gerrard as a second striker, like he was at the end of last season, it will be difficult for him.

“Everything is friendly. I've talked to him and the agents. If he can agree with Portsmouth it will be perfect for everyone.

“We have supported Peter from the day he signed and we offered him a new contract. But I can understand that he wants to play every week, wants to start every game.

“Also, a few people in the press were talking about £7million – so I talked about £15million to protect the club. But now it's just the player talking to Portsmouth and finding a solution.”

Would be tragic to have a player on the recovery going to the olympics instead of getting match fit back home... starting to hate the olympics more and more!

Could you imagine if we had the mancs and the chav's as the first 2 matches, I don't think anyone would be going to the Olympics.

For once I would like to see one of these players say "Sod the Olympics, playing for the club that pays my wages in key European and league fixtures is more important".

I've no objection with players playing for their country, but when it is a youth tournament it takes the piss a bit IMO. I know people will say we can't complain because he is in the catchment age but action needs to be taken about this. Was the guy expected to play for Holland in the Euros, for Holland at the Olympics, and then resume the season for us straight away? The tournament organisers and football authorities need to figure this out because this is a ludicrous situation.

I'm starting to worry about this now, Mascherano, Lucas, Babel and possibly Insua missing for opening two league games and CL qualifier. Mascherano and Babel would almost certainly have been starting those games. The last thing we need is another slow start

To be honest I don't think anything will happen because the current situation will or at least should encourage teams to have stronger youth setups in this country and or more players from these isles as we don't compete. I have to say that there is no real problem with the idea of Olympic football or players being called up - what I do object to is the bizarre under 23s plus some selected over age players which can deprive you of any foreign player and it can't be planned for at all.

I can see the point about the amount of football but somethings you just have to let ride as it doesn't seem to have come up all that often and the number of players involved is relatively small and would be less with more sensible regulations.

I don't think players should be expected to put their club above country on anything other than a personal level. Players are often accused of lacking ambition and I would say not wanting to go and compete on the world stage would be a sign of that. Some punches we just have to roll with. That doesn't mean that the system shouldn't at least attempt to be logical and fair.

This was always on the cards :sigh. I've no problems with players playing for their countries but I think Babel needs to push on at LFC and have major impact this season. He really needs a good start to the season to cement a starting place. I will be gutted if he misses the start of the season with us. he does always play well for Holland though and I could see him playing himself back into form nicely during the Olympics.

Overall its a major positive he's back in training. The lad could realy do with a full pre-season under his belt, he looked embarrasing short of match fitness at times last season. If he really gets himself into shape I think he could have a huge impact this season.

Erm, FIFA don't recognise the Olympics therefore you don't have to send players there.

Barca are refusing (understandably) to send Ronaldinho and Messi.

Although in this case i don't think it'd actually do Babel any harm to be involved confidence-wise.

                          Mascherano on the other hand.

Paul Ince is letting Ryan Nelsen go for the first 2 matches and then calling him back regardless. I don't know the dates involved but if the Guv can do it can Rafa not do it aswell. Realistically the Dutch, Argentina and Brazil should go a long way in the competition.

They might cancel the olympics yet with the pollution. I heard yesterday that its 7 times above what is considered polluted. God knows what ailments the players will pick up and its in August which will be hot one would imagine.

I think it'll help Lucas and maybe Babel to go if we bring in another left sided player, why Mascher has to go is beyond me.
