    Toon to sign Guthrie

Scott Carson heads for Liverpool exit
Jul 11 2008 EXCLUSIVE by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

SCOTT CARSON is set to depart Anfield as Rafa Benitez attempts to raise the funds he needs to make an offer for top target Robbie Keane.

The England international keeper is likely to follow Danny Guthrie through the exit door after Liverpool accepted an offer from Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle for the midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Bolton.

Guthrie will now hold talks with Keegan and if personal terms can be agreed the deal will give the 21-year-old the first team football he craves but was unable to secure at Anfield.

Liverpool have two offers on the table from rival Premiership clubs for Carson, who is keen to quit the Reds after spending last season on loan at Aston Villa, and Benitez is happy to do business.

New £3m signing Diego Cavalieri will provide back- up to Pepe Reina in the coming season, making Carson surplus to requirements.

Carson joined Liverpool from Leeds for £750,000 in January 2005 after being earmarked as a potential England keeper of the future.

He has since gone on to win international honours for his country but has found his progress at Anfield thwarted by the presence of Reina, who has developed into one of Europe’s most highly rated keepers.

Villa paid a fee in the region of £2m to loan Carson last season, but Martin O’Neill has not followed up his initial interest in making the deal permanent and the 22-year-old will now move elsewhere.

Without having a substantial transfer kitty at his disposal, Benitez knows he must sell a number of fringe players if he is to be able to come up with the kind of offer which would tempt Spurs to do business for Keane.

Spurs boss Juande Ramos is not looking to sell his captain, who is a hero to the White Hart Lane fans, but with Keane looking to make a move to the club he supported as a boy he may have no option but to do a deal if Benitez makes a sizeable offer.

Benitez, though, is not willing to offer the £20m Ramos is believed to be holding out for and has other targets in mind should Keane’s price tag prove prohibitive.

The Reds boss is looking for a traditional “number seven” to provide a link between his midfield and front man Fernando Torres and believes Keane has the game intelligence to fill such a role.

“Keane is clearly a player that has game intelligence,” said Benitez. “We're looking for players with the right quality and I think we'll find some in the next few days, although not necessarily the names that everybody knows.”

Peter Crouch, who partnered Torres on occasion last season, will today complete his £11m move to Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s reserve team ranks have been supplemented by the signing of another youngster from abroad.

Vincent Lucas Weijl, a 17-year-old forward who came through the academy at AZ Alkmaar, has signed a three year contract.

What kind of figures are we looking at? And I see Carson has been linked with a move away, again, yet no specific club or destination is mentioned That makes me think either it's two mid-to-lower ranked teams he might be reluctant to join or we're talking about not getting the kind of money for him we had previously hoped. I'm think we screwed up with Carson, we should have sold him last summer rather than loan him, his value has plummeted in a year thanks to that disastrous England performance. Hindsight eh?

I think Carson could fetch £6m and Guthrie about £2m. That's quite a significant amount of money.

And he only cost 750,ooo, wasn't on huge wages, we had round about 2mill off villa for a season loan, and we can now sell him on....not bad business all in all.

It'll be interesting to see how much we can get for Guthrie, as it seems he's not good enough for us but could be a decent Premiership player who has had a years experience playing at Premiership level, I think we should be looking at a couple of million minimum, plus sell on clauses etc

so riise and itandje paid for dossena

alonso and finnan will pay for barry

carson, guthrie and crouch will pay for keane

net spend of not much so far. pennant will be sold imo for an easy 5 million. even if we have a summer budget of 20 million that means we have about 25 million to play with. will easy pay for either villa or silva.

my biggest worry is who do we play when we rest torres or he's injured. neither keane, kuyt or turd can lead the line.

I think our summer budget is a big fat zero.

In terms of our summer budget, I think the stats have shown that Rafa's net spend throughout his time at Anfield is on a par with the club's CL earnings over that period, so assuming that trend continues he could have this past season's CL prize money to spend (anyone have any ideas how much that is?). Bear in mind also that the Mascherano deal is being funded from this summer's transfer kitty. In any case, he is not being given enough to compete with the the big 2, and it's barely more than he himself has helped earn for the club, weither through performance (CL & EPL prize money) and player sales.

Not sure there's been much interest in Pennant, unless we bring in another right sided option I'm not sure who else can play there after Kuyt. Benny perhaps.

Otherwise I'd pretty much agree with that, starting to look like Benitez has done some useful wheeling and dealing this summer even if some are unsure about those coming in (barry/Keane). Still, people have been saying for ages that we need to stop signing squad players, the deals done / looking likely this summer all appear to be for outright first teamers.

I hope you're right about the summer budget.

I guess we could have Babel down as a backup striking option? Keane can lead the line btw, not ideal for the long term but he did it very effectively for Ireland in the World Cup in Korea/Japan.

Sounds like Rafa has done well rebalancing the team with virtually zero outlay should we get our targets, but I can't help but think how much better we would be had a more sizeable budget this summer to add a Silva or Aguero to add to our Keane, Baz, Degen & Dossena.
                        3rd place. Worst champions ever.

The encouraging thing about that article is that it doesn't say Milner for 4 mill plus Guthrie.
So we can probably deduce Milner isn't comming

you'll probably find that Milner's name was a journo's best guess when news got out that the 2 clubs were negotiating over someone.

I think we are fine for options there - Kuyt, Babel, Benyoun and Gerrard more than constitute a set of good options. I think we need to look at getting another player capable of playing both sides as at least two of those would count as options for for both flanks. Pennant alters the shape of the team and I think will be increasingly less useful to us - I like his style of play in some ways but it doesn't suit our team.

It isn't necessarily a player on player upgrade but I do think Pennant <-> Milner would suit our squad better.
