Having given this quite a few seconds thought I have a new role for him.

Lets not piss about with telling him what role to fill, behind Torres, right midfield with Keane in the middle etc.

Pick 10 guys with specific jobs to do and tell Gerrard to go out and be a Captain, fire fight where neccessary and make things happen .

I was thinking if we play the 4-2-3-1 the 3 likely to be Gerrard Babel Keane/Kuyt, would all be fairly fluid and able to just player wherever they want constantly swapping over, as I think Kuyt aside the other 3 should be comfortable in any of those positions. It gives Rafa options

gerrard playing in the middle of the 3 in a 4231 does not work against the big teams. torres gets left upfront on his own as gerrard comes looking for the ball. gerrard's very game is that he is a box to box midfielder. in a 4231 he needs to be the attacking one of the 2 defensive midfielders. masch can sit, gerrard has the freedom to roam.

if you look at the way we play 4231 in the past momo, masch and lucas have made attacking runs. they're just not very good at it. gerrard here would be ideal.

robbie keane or even yossi would do a great job behind torres and i'm 100% sure that:

- gerrard would still get in double figures
- yossi & keane will score as many as gerrard did last season given the games
- torres will still score!

Infact I also think playing this way will make it easier to breakdown tight defenses, a key weakness that still remains in our game.

I think that is what he does ...... that was the problem with him and Rafa at the start .... he didnt have the game brain to do that ... now he is better at it ....

SG has played two seasons at a position other than CM. Both those seasons he got 20+ goals, far surpassing anything he had ever done in the middle.

its not about how many goals he gets but rather how better the team plays.

SG does not have the nouse to play CM in a 4231. He completely unbalances the team. That's why he plays as the 2nd striker, where the team is balanced and he scores twice as many goals as he ever has from CM. Yes, twice as many.

What are you giving up those extra goals for by playing him in CM? What do we gain that offsets losing those goals and additional assists?

I've only seen it not work against Manure. You claim others, I'm sceptical.

His record of not going missing against manure is the same whether he's played in the 3 or CM.

You can't discount 20 goals and 20 assists just because he played bad against manure.

Unbalancing, in CM SG is not smart enough know when to get forward and when to stay back that unbalances the team and puts a greater onus on players around him to cover for him.
