i agree it's always good for confidence when you beat your rivals and its bad when you lose, but still if we'd have beaten man city and boro away and wigan, villa, brum and spurs at home(all these were draws), things would have been different in the standings. and that without taking points from our rivals!
very good post...i would also like to add that had we been closer to the mancs in the league when we went to old trafford last season, then it might have been different too purely because we could have set out to defend....
put it this way, in my opinion, if the mancs had a ****e start - similar to last season for them - whcih is possible considering that ronaldo is out, rooney seems to be chubby after his wedding, and various players like scholes and giggs are getting on, well lets say we were 4 points clear of them when they come to anfield They will need a win whereas a draw would be an okay result for us... we sit back, they push more and more and then we hit them on the break and we win the game. Basically what i am saying is that our league standing at the time will obviously have a bearing on how the teams set up etc.... that is why a lot of the games between the top teams early in the seaosn can end up being draws - simply because it's not the worst result for either team....
remember when the mancs beat us 2 seasons ago at anfield. We ****in battered them and should have won by 2 or 3...they got a jammy goal at the end.... well my point is if we are in a good position in the league when we are playing the other top 4 teams, then a draw might be a good result for us whereas they need a win. If teams over-commit against us, then we will just pcik em off and could very well end up with a win.....
The key is to beat the other top 3 IMO. If we can win at least 3 out of the 6 meetings v Utd, Chavs and Arse we can do it.
I think we need to get something out of these games, not neccesarily wins though, i still believe its the dropping of points at home against the Wigans, Birminghams etc that cost us far more last season.

If we're fighting for 5th who else will finish above us? Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, and who??
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

tbh i can't see anyone breaking up the top 4. spurs might come close but they have/will have too many new players to start the season strong. other than that everton and villa look the most likely, but both don't have enough quality to be able to do that.

That's what I mean, if we don't finish in the top 4 something serious will have gone wrong IMO

I don't think it will happen this year but Everton have shown how well a well set up team can do and now Man City, Villa and Spurs have the money to get better players than they do and have good managers. In the next few years I would expect one of them to challenge for the CL.

dossena is class, but we still lack one or two players to make the team strong enough. we also need time to adapt to the new style with fullbacks providing the width. therefore i feel this would not be our year...yet.
