POURIE TREBLE FIRES U18S TO VICTORY
Paul Hassall at the Academy 23 August 2008

Marvin Pourie bagged a first-half hat-trick as Liverpool Under-18s edged to a 4-3 opening day win at home to Crystal Palace in the FA Premier Academy League.
The German striker netted three times in the opening half hour with a stunning goal from David Amoo capping a superb first-half display as Hugh McAuley's men went in at the interval leading by a 4-1 scoreline.

However, Palace fought back in the second period and made a real game of it in a contest that provided a great advert for Academy football.

The Reds dominated an open first period but could have found themselves 1-0 down within the opening minute of the contest when a mistake allowed James Comley to race onto a long ball over the top and although Reds stopper Chris Oldfield got out to block the attacker, the ball rebounded back off the Palace man and flew agonisingly wide for the visitors.

It was a let off for the hosts and they responded by taking advantage of a similar mistake from Palace defender Jerry Nnamani to snatch the lead on five minutes.

Full-back Nathan Clyne fizzed a sloppy pass across his area straight at Nnamani who could only watch on in horror as Pourie pounced on the loose ball to drill a shot beyond Kieran Thorpe and into the bottom corner of the net.

A subdued period of the game followed in which Palace enjoyed two promising moments when Nathaniel Pinney saw his low effort deflect wide while Michael Abnett smashed over from 20 yards after the resulting corner was only half-cleared.

It looked like the Reds would have to satisfy themselves with a 1-0 interval lead until a burst of activity around the half hour mark saw them take a firm grip of the game.

A brilliant move involving Shane O'Connor and Alex Kacaniklic ended with the Swedish winger crossing low for Pourie, who arrived at the near post to steer in his second of the contest.

It was a huge boost for Hugh McAuley's men and it got even better a minute later when Kacaniklic, who enjoyed a superb first-half on the left, fed Pourie in the inside right channel and he again made no mistake with a clinical finish from 12 yards out.

At 3-0 down Palace looked deflated, but in a twist that was typical of the game, they got back into it when Joe Goldsmith set up Michael Abnett who held off a challenge to squeeze the ball beyond Oldfield.

It looked like being the perfect half-time pick-me-up for the visitors but a minute before the whistle they were undone again by a move that resulted in the goal of the match.

Once again Kacaniklic was the architect, weaving his way beyond the right full-back to send over a delightful cross for David Amoo who arrived late and powered home a superb header.

It could have been the same story in the second period too as Lauri Dalla Valle tried his best to get in on the act with two good long range efforts while Amoo saw another header brilliantly saved by Kieran Thorpe.

However, Palace were determined not to be on the end of an opening day drubbing and Graeme Edwards fired them back into it on the hour mark after Jack Holland had cut the ball back to him after drawing Oldfield from his line.

The Reds seemed content to see the match out and take a 4-2 victory but they were stunned eight minutes from time when James Comley coolly slotted home to set up a nervy finale.

The visitors twice went close to levelling in the dying minutes but Oldfield pulled off two top drawer saves to ensure the Reds started the season with three points.

Liverpool U18s: Oldfield, Scott, O'Connor (Adjarevic 53), Metcalf, Kennedy, Roberts, Amoo (Ince 74), Pepper, Dalla Valle, Pourie (Ellison 65), Kacaniklic. Unused subs: Duyan, Cooper.

It was a frustrating outing for Liverpool Under-18s as they lost 2-0 at Coventry City on Saturday morning.
The home side took the lead after just five minutes when Reds goalkeeper Chris Oldfield fumbled a cross. To make matters worse Oldfield had to leave the pitch injured 10 minutes later and was replaced by Hakan Duyan.

Nathan Eccleston was back to lead the attack but Hughie McAuley's side badly missed the quality of the injured Adam Pepper and Alex Kacaniklic who is away on international duty with Sweden.

"It wasn't a satisfying performance and it was a frustrating day for us," McAuley told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It was a bad mistake by Chris for their first goal and that gave Coventry a lot of confidence. We had a lot of possession but just couldn't break them down and didn't do enough in the final third.

"They had 10 men behind the ball at times and we didn't have that little bit of magic you need to open them up.

"Their second goal came from a counter attack when we were looking for an equaliser. It was very frustrating and the new lads in the team will learn from this game."

Liverpool Under-18s are back in action next Saturday when they entertain Nottingham Forest at the Kirkby Academy (kick-off 12 noon).

Liverpool Under-18s: Chris Oldfield (Hakan Duyan 15), Michael Scott, Jack Metcalf, Conor Coady (U-16), Joe Kennedy, Michael Roberts, David Amoo, Alex Cooper (James Ellison 60), Marvin Pourie, Nathan Eccleston, Thomas Ince (Lauri Dalla Valle 60). Unused sub: Andre Wisdom (U-16).

I wonder do Coventry spend as much as us on young players.

            Liverpool U18's 2-0 Nottingham Forest U18's

Liverpool Under-18s maintained their impressive home form with a comfortable 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Academy League today. Hughie McAuley's team dominated for the majority of the contest against their East Midlands counterparts and deservedly took home the spoils courtesy of a first-half header from Lauri Dalla Valle and a late pildriver from Astrit Adjarevic.

The Reds began the match at a hectic pace, as if determined to make ameds for last week's disappointing defeat at Coventry, and they could have opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute when an error by Forest centre back Matt Skyes gave Thomas Ince a clear sight of goal, but his stabbed effort was deflected to safety at the last second.

There was little sign of the visitors as an attacking threat and on 13 minutes a flowing one touch move involving James Ellison, Dalla Valle and Ince resulted in the left winger slipping a delightful low cross across the face of goal, but unfortunately for Liverpool, there was no one at the far post to give it the finish it deserved.

A minute later and another chance went begging when Dalla Valle's acrobatic effort from the edge of the box flew way over the crossbar after a clever run and cross from David Amoo on the right.
Forest were in need of some respite and they nearly got it on 25 minutes when Nialle Rodney crashed home Tim Hopkinson's knock-down, only to see his celebrations cut short by the referee's assistant's flag.

That aside, it was all one way traffic in the first period and at times Liverpool's approach play was breathtaking, with Dalla Valle often instrumental with a series of deft flicks and touches. The striker was enjoying an impressive afternoon and should have opened the socring on 33 minutes when he seized on the loose ball 40 yards from goal, powered beyond two defenders before seeing his near post shot beaten away by Forest keeper Karl Darlow.

However, the Finn was not to be denied and from the resulting corner he rose majestically to bullet home a header to give the Reds a deserved interval lead. The visitors inevitably improved in the second-half but Liverpool were still the side creating the better openings with Dalla Valle twice denied by Darlow. Substitute Nathan Eccleston could have made it two 15 minutes from time but his audacious volley from the left wing crashed back off the crossbar. In truth the second 45 rarely lived up to the first in terms of the calibre of football, but the Reds were always in control and Astrit Adjarevic drilled in late on to ensure they eased to their second win of the season.

He has not even excelled at U18 level yet and Eccelstone should be starting for the reserves at this stage if he was that good. Hope you are right but they seem a long way off yet.

Anyway, ive got a feeling this Dalla Valle kid is special

It was the under 16's he played for after Jan last season, scoring 5 goals in 6 matches.

My description of him in my original post:

                      Lauri Dalla Valle

Lauri is the Finn wonderkid who everyone wanted to sign and has been described by LFC staff as the most natural goalscorer ever seen for his age. He signed for Inter at schoolboy level as his dad is Italian and a big Inter fan but he become homesick after 4 months and returned to his homeland where Liverpool convinced him his future was here in January and scored 5 goals in 6 matches for the under 16's. He scored ridiculas amounts of goals at schoolboy level and has the ability to convert it to professional level, so watch out for the finn in the white boots this season.

What's the deal with Astrit Adjarevic. I thought that he had been released. Although, I then read that he would be allowed to stay with the academy for a further year if he didn't find another club before the transfer window.

Still having trials with other teams. McAuley said he missed an 18's game lately because he was having a trial elsewhere

                            Abit of team news:

Keeper Oldfield has had an operation on his shoulder injury and is likely to be out for a couple of months. But left-back Shane O’Connor is back in training following a groin strain and could return this week, while midfielder Alex Kacaniklic is back from international duty with Sweden’s youth side.
