    super-xabi....

i feel he is going to have a great season if he stays here.....

he could really really prove his point to rafa..... great for us reds.....

the thing is....i don't know why Martin O'Neill didn't simply ask Liverpool for a straight swap earlier in the summer..... if he played ball a bit more instead of throwing his toys out of the pram, then O'Neill could have ended up getting Alonso and Finnan for Barry..... obviously Xabi could have quite possibly turned down villa but if o'neill gave him a clause in his contract where he could leave after a season if they didnt qualify for europe, and combined that with a talk saying something along the lines of 'i will help you prove to rafa that lfc were wrong to sell you' then you never ****in know..... put it this way, a lot of players would rather play for villa than fenerbache, who xabi was also linked to...

however, i am ****in delighted that xabi now could stay on at liverpool.....brilliant news if it happens....

I think it might be time to part company with him, amazing first season but since that injury only a shadow of the player he was. If were gonna sell him he's probably gonna fetch the most now but its a sad state of affairs when we have to sell to buy.

Rafael Benitez hailed the performance of Liverpool's young guns after they concluded their pre-season schedule with a 1-0 win over Lazio at Anfield.
The Reds boss admitted he was pleased with his side's overall display after Andriy Voronin stoppage time winner sealed a deserved victory against the Italians and Benitez felt the impact of the likes of Jay Spearing - who created the winning goal - was the main highlight of the night.

"I think it was a very good game against a good team," he said.

"You could see they were pretty sharp, comfortable on the ball and played well on the counter attack. We had two or three really good chances to score and win the game so overall it was very positive, particularly as we had a lot of young players in the side.

"The young players were good too. We know all about the senior players but they all played well. Nabil El Zhar, Jay Spearing, Damien Plessis, and Nemeth - they were all good."

Benitez also had words of praise for Xabi Alonso, who enjoyed a superb display at the heart of the Reds' midfield.

"He was playing well," he said.

"That was positive for us. He is a good player and hopefully we will have another good player coming in soon. We can improve so we will try to improve."

With a Champions League qualifier away to Standard Liege and a Premier League encounter with Sunderland just around the corner, Benitez is now focused on putting the final touches to his squad and admitted a left-sided player was still a priority.

"Clearly we have problems on the left," he said. "We have sold Riise and Kewell and Fabio Aurelio is injured. Leto doesn't have a work permit and Babel is at the Olympic Games, so I think we can improve in this area."

Barry must be signing soon so.

ya he mentioned the left alright..... i actually hope it is barry now because if not then it could very well be riera who i wouldn't particularly like us to sign to be honest.

then again, perhaps it could be silva.....

i'd rather it was riera than barry.....but it's obvious it's gonna be barry.

Id say it was our right side that weak, we have Dossena and Babel on the left but Kuyt and Arbeloa wont provide the creavity needed for the league.

defo, when you think we have dossena, aurelio, insua, babel all on the left side ( and can all play in midfield ) and benni can play there too. but on the right only really pennant and again benni. kyut isn't a midfielder. right side is a must for us but rafa for some reason doesn't think so. maybe he is thinking of putting gerard back on the right again.

Thats what i thought Gerrard out wide with Barry/Alonso in the middle with Masch. Think we need one more creative player to sign for us to win the league otherwise we will draw too many games again.

am really pleased to hear Xabi is doing well, the lad has the class. If he can get the game time and keep the consistency then he will be fine

Lots of players can fill in on the right. The thing is that right sided players are up against left sided players generally, no? So if we have quality left sided players who can compete against right sided players then the balance of the team is good.

Well a large number of fans spoke last night...the xabi alonso chants were briiliant. And then there were the 'stick gareth barry up your arse' chants.

Disgraceful carry on by so called fans. What has Barry done to deserve that?
