That was a tough tough match - i'd put it down to a number of things,

Standard Liege were underestimated(certainly by me and prob 99% of everyone else from reading the forums the last few days) - they were a very organised unit, worked ****ing hard and fought for their lives out there. They threw everything but the kitchen sink and at one point i'm sure the manager was in the kitchen trying to rip that out the wall to throw at us too. They came out the blocks like that Gay sprinter fella (u know the one Tyson is it?) and didn't give us a chance to settle. I was very impressed with Standard Liege, good little side and if they play like that at anfield we will HAVE to improve.

We seemed sloppy and lacked any real edge or sharpness - but iirc pretty much every CL qualifier the last 5 years or so we have looked of the pace in the first leg - it's almost a case of it's a competitve pre-season game that we just get what we can, and a week or so later the seasons started and we have gotten out of bed and woken up!

We missed Mascher, plus (and i am by far not his biggest fan) Babel would have been an option. In hindsight, as much as i think agger is a cracking player maybe skirtle would have been better starting - some real fight in the team with the lack of masher, that said tho i don't think benitez expected them to be so fierce and was probably hoping we would dominate possesion and with agger on the pitch we know how good he is as giving us another option going forward with the ball at his feet (he showed glimpses last night that was encouring to see)

Plessis struggled, but i thought Kuyt and Benayoun were anonymous and Alonso!! - well i have been to-ing and fro-ing over the Alonso/Barry, and i think Alonso is a good player, and i would be happy to keep him but i would have loved to have had Barry in that team last night - either in the centre alongside xabi or even left mid.

we also seemed to miss that link between attack and midfield - obv we had a half fit gerrard on the bench, but that must have been a horrible game for torres and keane to play in, zero service, fighting and chasing for every ball then getting ****ing whacked if they got near it!

All in all a bit of a wake up call for the lads, they will be feeling it today! - the seasons started, no harm or damage done, we got a draw they have to come to anfield, and we will be better prepared for both the start of the season on Saturday and the return leg

Terrible game to watch. Lets hope it acts as a wake up call in time for the weekend. We missed Mascherano last night.

Also, was dissapointed at not seeing Keane drop a bit deeper to link with the midfield a bit more. Poor performances all round (apart from Reina obviously)

Plessis just doesn't seem to have enough to his game, from the few games I've seen him in. He's a DM but he is allowed to pass the ball forwards, rather than sideways to the nearest man. Hopefully he'll get more expressive as he grows in age/confidence.

As for Yossi, is he the slowest played in our squad? For some reason I always thougth of him as a small nipppy player, but he's actually pretty tall and very very slow. Don't see a role for him on the 'wing' and he's not going to play anywhere else. Should be Carling cup for Yossi this year.

Pepe played well and is great.

            Benitez must be fuming.

Agger was also very poor, giving the ball away far too often.

Game cried out for width. Kuyt showed he cant play against weak opposition,as it means he has to do something while in possesion.

Set pieces were poop. How many throw ins did Arbeloa waste?

Excellent post - a fine summary of last night.

Liege were certainly underestimated by a lot of people. I had a slight feeling that they were going to be a tougher challenge than most people thought. They are the Belgian champions and full of confidence, and they know that the two games against us are the biggest two games they will have this season.

Even so, we should have had too much quality in our side for them, but we were out-fought and even out-played at times. I'm sure it will be different in the second leg though.

People go on about the 2nd leg, but have you seen our 2nd leg results for qualifiers under Rafa? We nearly always lose!

check the record books and we have won every one!
                  its the result that counts.

He was injured mate, so wasn't an option last night

                        Let's look at them all:

                        - Last year we beat toulouse 4-0 at home having won the away leg one nil
                        - 06/07 we drew 1-1 with Maccabi Haifa having won the first leg at home 2-1
                        - 05/06 we played three qualifiers. We lost to CSKA Sofia 1-0 having won the away leg 2-1
                        - we beat Kaunas 2-0 having won the away leg 3-1
                        - and we beat TNS 3-0 in each leg
                        - 04/05 we lost to GAK 1-0 having won the away leg 2-0

So just taking second legs of CL qualifiers we have played 6, won 3, drawn 1 and lost 2 having comfortably won the first leg. We have won all six ties, which is all that really counts.

We beat Tolouse 4 - 0 at anfield last season. Or was that the first leg?
