He did indeed. I can't fathom how Dirk somehow superceded him throughout the season in Rafa's mind as the man to escape rotation / (criticism).

Kuyt does jobs that make other players better. His contribution is indirect. Not saying its the right choice just that Rafa looks at more than just direct contribution.

I believe Yossi could do that & more. Rafa's choice as manager but Yossi has the same never-say-die attitude as Dirk. Plus skill & finishing. If the fees were reversed (9.5m > 5m) I do wonder if their circumstances would be similarly reversed

Babel is not good at all on the right and has been poor whenever he was played there.

When did Smicer ever score 10 goals in a season? With the exception of one shot in one game (and what a shot it was ), Smicer was one of the least effective players I've ever seen for us. Saying he was better than Kuyt and Benayoun is silly, and anachronistic, both are significantly more useful at times, and have produced performances in the red shirt (admittedly not frequently enough, but still) better than Smicer ever did. And as for Barmby, don't make me laugh.

Yossi is, however, absolutely not a left sided player, he doesn't look at all comfortable out there. He'd never be a guaranteed starter for me, but there are far worse players out there than Benayoun.
