TBH I think Rafa thinks the same. I think he initially wanted to build around Alonso but has thought better of it. We shouldn't make too many judgements too early in the season coz we haven't seen what our team will be yet.

I think SG will start in the same position as last year and RK in Kuyt's position pretty soon but I expect them to interchange quite a lot also.

EDIT The Keane signing will make alot more sense when Torres or SG gets injured or has to be rested. Don't get me wrong, we haven't signed him purely for that and we should wait a little while to see what value we get from him.

Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24

Damn I agree with you again.

The Gerrard behind Torres combination last season was possibly the best in Europe.

Ideally if we play 4 4 2 I hope it's with Masch holding and SG in an attacking free role behind Torres and Keane. (Basically a 4 1 3 2)

And if we play 4 2 3 1 I would hope Stevie is based behind Torres with Babel and Keane either side.

If it wasn't for Gerrard I think both Houllier and Rafa would not have lasted as long as they have and did. He is a matchwinner and has scored crucial goals and won crucial games when all seems to have been lost.

See I think Gerrard is both a blessing and a curse. I suspect that you might be right in terms of Houllier but I think incorporating Gerrard into a system for Rafa has been one of his biggest problems. He has at least twice done it successfully though - once on the right and last season behind the forwards. The problem is that he remains flawed in the latter position in terms of the big games and wanting to be involved too much and has taken against playing on the right.

For me I think each season Rafa has benefited from having Gerrrard but overall his efforts at building a title winning team have probably been hampered by his presence. This is not a criticism of Gerrard per se but I think he is hard to fit into a system and like when United sold Beckham and then RvN sometimes the loss of a top player can allow the evolution of the rest of the team more easily.

Why play your most consistent centra back at right back just to fit in your favourite players? Carra at Centre Back or not at all....

I actually think Carra is the best RB at the club (Degen could be better, but I havn`t seen enough).
Carra might not be the typical attacking RB Rafa wants, but he can put a cross (or score the odd deflected goal) and knows how to support the RW.
