Murphy didn't ask for a Transfer at all and cried when he told the rest of the squad that Rafa wanted to sell him. The same thing happened with Finnan - now I totally understand that Rafa has a right to sell whoever he wants BUT only of the replacement is better and I can't say they have been even by Murphy's standards.

Danny Murphy or Alonso and Mascherano, yeah no better at all mate. Unless of course you're classing him as a wideman because Houllier pleyed him out of position there, which is something else that you criticise Rafa for. Can't win really can he?

he also finished more than 20 points off the title with them and its the title that you're apparently judging him on. he's now 11 so lets see where we are at the end of the seaosn in that regard.

the ac milan in 05 against 07 is a totally valid point too. the poorest team in the 90 mins won both those titles so, as a team, we were better in the 07 final. luck counts in a 1 off game. nevermind our comeback but dudek's save from sheva is the ONLY thing that gives your point any credence. if it wasnt for that, rafa is a master tactician for getting to 2 finals and 1 own goal away from a third in 4 years. that's not far from footballing genius.

how about hamman and smicer on and slotting gerrard at right back. 3 massive decisions that turned the game around and kept them (silvinho out).

smicer had the game of his life that he has never before or since equalled. hamman as discussed was old and wanted a longer contract and gerrad finished the game playing out of position.

if it wasnt for them, then we'd have been humiliated in that final thanks to houllier's misfits like traore, baros and kewell. gerrard, alonso and smicer scored that night don't forget.

07 we controlled the game and that was rafa's team. 08 was riise's own goal as we know. small things and luck make a big difference.

That was what I thought when I read the Rafa did better with Houllier's players than his own. I'm glad someone mentioned that.

I think it's a bit tough to say that Kuyt and Yossi are replacements for Murphy.

I look at Garcia as a replacement for Murphy, played similar role and was bought as Murphy was sold. I think Garcia is inifinately more talented than Murphy, if a little inconsistent

I don't think Kuyt is an imporvement at all, I don't rate either of them... but big money has been spent on a minor "upgrade" - which is the reason for this discussion.

Hmmmm I think we sold Garcia to help with the Torres deal and the fact he wanted to return to Spain. Can't criticise Rafa on either of those points. The jury is still out on whether yossi is better than Luis. In actual fact I think Yossi is even more inconsistent than Luis and certainly doesn't suit the wide midfielder role as well as Luis

I think Murphy was decent for us at the time, around 2001 he chipped in with around 6-8goals a season but wasn't great, also now he's 31 and when he plays against I'm hardly worried about the effect he'll have against us
