    Rafa's summer signings

    Yes I know IN RAFA WE TRUST but putting away the condoms for a second can we have an honest debate about this summers signings so far?

    Keane £20m - superb player but is he what we needed at that price?
    Dossenna £8m - I can't say he is any better than Aurelio
    Rieira £9m - Looks decent, lacks pace, needs games
    Degen - Free - Injury prone, probably won't play much

    I can't say I have been swept off my feet with any of them to be honest and I didn't think the Torres / Gerrard partnership needed breaking up. IMO we should have got Riera and my God we need a replacement for Dirk Kuyt. If Gerrad is to play in CM, I'd have played Babel next to Torres and still had a winger on the right.

    It's weird, but I think Pennant would have torn Stoke a new one today.

        man this really isnt the time is it? All the big teams have games like this, the little team parks the bus in front of the goal, defends for their lives for a point. Fair play to Stoke, doesnt make us a **** team, doesnt make the players poor. Just one of those days. Arsenal (Fulham and WBA) have had similar games, so have Utd (Newcastle opening day) Chavs (Spurs)

          Keane - has been disappointing, his confidence seems shot and he really does look a shadow of himself. As soon as he does score though I'm confident it'll be lift off. £20M was a daft price though.

          Dossena - you need 2 decent players in each position really and if he's good enough for the world champions then he's good enough for me. He looks a good player IMO. No worries on this one.

          Rieira - looks a good buy, a proper winger, just wish he had pace too.

          Degen - Sean Dundee anyone? He'll be off next summer without ever playing a premiership game.

            If you saw Pennant play midweek for the reserves then there is now way you would have made that statement, Pennant was shocking against Sunderland reserves. He would not have made a difference today and neither would have any world class winger - we just had a bad day and never worked their keeper enough and just had too many long shots.

            And our initial outlay for Riera was £5.5m and definately not £9m

              I think this thread is important given that game after game we have issues out wide and with creativity - I know Rafa favours a defence first Italian brand of football but we need more pace on the wing and better creativity around Torres. Overall, the summer spending was poor by Rafa.

                I wouldn't say it was poor, I don't think today's result really has much bearing on the summer signings.

                Stoke defended well and we didn't take the chances we did create, Torres would normally have got at least one today. Once the first goal was in we would have got more.

                The Keane signing was questionable, but looking at todays team I can see the thinking behind the signing. Against the weaker teames play Gerrard in the middle with Keane behind Torres. He gets you 15 goals a season playing there, Gerrerd gets a few less, say 15, Torres gets 20, Babel with 10, that's 70 goals there.

                It makes sense, it's just not quite right at the minute with Torres and Gerrard not 100% and Keane needing time to settle in. Lets see after 11 games we will have a better idea then.

                    I think Rafa's summer signings have all been world beaters. How does he do it on such a tight budget?

                              Degen is a ridiculous signing and we got rid of a decent right back and replaced him with someone who isn't even going to play.
