The defender was a mainstay of the Liverpool side prior to picking up a foot injury which decimated his 2007/2008 campaign.

The signing and subsequent emergence of Martin Skrtel has forced Agger down the pecking order and reports suggest Benitez was less than impressed with the Dane’s display against Standard Liege in a Champions League qualifier.

Agger has admitted Benitez was not happy with certain aspects of Liverpool’s display against the Belgians, but has insisted there is no rift between the pair.

"Of course there are things that Benitez was not satisfied with after Liege," Agger told Danish TV station TV3.

"We didn't play a good match, but it is a big lie to say we had an argument. I certainly hope it is only football reasons why I am not playing.

"I have no problem in this club. He has just said that the team is playing very well, and that is why I am not playing."

Agger’s future has been cast into doubt, as he could buy out the remainder of his contract, but he has indicated his desire to fight for his place at Anfield.

"I want to stay here and fight for my place in the squad," he added.

"I'm not satisfied with the fact that I'm not playing but I have to cope and accept it.

      "I'm happy at Liverpool."

Hard to drop Carra or Skrtel really considering we have conceeded very little this year. I like that Agger is going to fight and is not making a big deal about it. Past players would be knocking on Rafa's door seeking assurances instead of getting their head down and working hard.
I think there's an argument for playing all three centre halfs and playing a wing back system with the current squad.

Why would Rafa take our best defender this season thus far out of the team?

I love Agger as a player and hope he stays at Liverpool for years to come but Carragher and Skrtel are striking up a great partnership and i wouldn't like to see it broken.

I wouldnt drop him, just rest him. Perfect game to bring Agger in. Would even consider resting Carra and playing Agger and Skrtel. We need to keep Agger sharp, if we pick up an injury we are going to need him back to his best.

              Fair enough dude.

I can see Carragher playing at right back in some games this season allowing Agger to come in and partner Skrtel. We've got plenty of options in defence now and you cant write Sami off either.

Real looking to bid for Agger

It is today reported that Real are looking to bid for Agger in the january transfer window. Reals vice-president stated to the danish website kunsport.dk that:

"We already had plans to buy Agger this summer, together with a number of other players. Robinhos situation however took to many ressources, due to the media attention that we had to postpone the plans to bid for Agger and others."
"He (Agger) is a player we have looked at for a while, and it is likely that we will make a bid in january. He is a world-class player and would fit in well in our system. We are looking to sign an attacker and defender, and at the moment Agger is at the top of our list. But we have not decided on which players to bid for yet, because we are still working on our transfer-strategy for january.

                ----------------

Looks like there could be competition for his signature, if he is not playing matches with us. It is speculated that he will replace Cannavaro.

I hope it isen't true, and I wan't Agger to stay. But the real interest just goes to show how good a player he is. Agger will sooner or later take back his position in the team.

Agger tops Real Madrid's most-wanted-list according to danish web site Kunsport.dk. This is confirmed in the article by Real's vice president Jose Angel Sanchez.

                    A bit worrying I'd say...

Edit: Sorry, Darkon - didn't see your post...

Agger needs to play in more of our home games, or against the pus sides that we can attack more. Interchange him with either Skrtel or Carra. Maybe Carra. We need to play him for his and our own good. Otherwise he could go...

Real Madrid written all over him now.

I'm sure he'll be a big success out there.

I'd absolutely hate it if we sell Agger now and it would make no sense at all.

We need to tie him down to a long term deal as soon as possible.

I was worried when the link initially came out, but now you've said that and going by your predictions in the Utd and bitters match thread, we've nothing to worry about- he's staying put!

                                The offal:

Rafael Benitez today told Real Madrid they would be wasting their time making a transfer window bid for Daniel Agger.
Reports in this morning's media suggested the Spanish giants are preparing to swoop for the Danish defender once the window reopens next year, but Benitez insists Agger is not for sale and remains a part of his future Anfield plans.

"The situation is very simple, Daniel Agger is our player and he is not for sale," said the Reds boss.

"His future is at Anfield and nowhere else. He knows my ideas because we have talked with him and he has a long future with us.

"We do not want to lose our concentration just before we play Manchester City by talking about other things but it is important that people know that Agger is not for sale."
