Scans have revealed Fernando Torres will be out of action for between 10 and 15 days, while Ryan Babel is a major doubt for this weekend's clash with Wigan.

Doctors at Melwood discovered a tear in Torres' right hamstring which could rule him out for the next four games - Wigan (h), Atletico (a), Chelsea (a) and Portsmouth (h).

The injury was sustained after 17 minutes of Spain's World Cup qualifier in Belgium on Wednesday night.

Babel, meanwhile, should be back sooner after spraining his left ankle during Holland's match against Norway.

Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "A scan on Fernando Torres has shown a tear in his right hamstring which will sideline the player for between 10 and 15 days.

"Ryan Babel has sprained his left ankle and is a major doubt for Wigan on Saturday."

Certainly far from a worst case scenario. Torres will be missed, and gutted for the lad missing out on his return to Vicente Calderon.

Only ten points from the next four games then...

Would not be surprised to see Torres on the Bench against Athletico. Just for a little Gesture to the crowd.

If you mean he may travel with the team, but not be in the squad, then you may be right.

No I actually mean he'll be in the Squad just like he was against Utd, but played no active part.

If there is no chance of him playing, Rafa wouldn't stick him on the bench. Rafa = ruthless

I didn't think there was a chance of seeing him play against UTD, doubt he would have come on, he was still there on the bench.

Nah. Think that could be a possibility for the Chavs, but going on the diagnosis I can't see him making the squad.

Whats Rafa gonna lose, a place on the bench for someone like Jay Spearing who won't come on. He'll get brownie points for it from Torres, Athlectico & thier fans IMO.

Thought you meant as a sub, I doubt he'd be named as a sub

The only chance Torres has of making the bench is if Rafa feels a bit of gamesmanship will tip the balance in our favour. Many a coach have said their star player is fit and put them in the squad to travel, maybe even sticking them on the bench.

This can cause problems for the opposition who will set out as though they are facing the star player. This tatic negates the use of one sub, but as you said, it is sometimes filled just for the sake of it.

Personally I would not bother and I would tell Fernando to go do one. I'd let him travel, but he'd be in smart casuals for the game. I'd rather someone like Jay Spearing take the spot for experience.
