He certainly wasn't the quickest of full-backs, but I rarely saw him being exposed by any opposition winger (with the possible exception of John Robertson at Forest) - possibly due to his unerring ability to stand directly in the path of anyone looking to outrun him. Positionally, he was generally very good, and he obviously benefitted from playing alongside people like Hansen, Thompson and Lawrenson, all of whom were expert readers of the game and could provide the necessary cover when required.

He also built up highly effective understandings on the right with Jimmy Case and then Sammy Lee, both of whom were highly mindful of their defensive responsibilities, giving him the freedom to join in with attacks and arrive late in the box, often unseen.

A great player? Without doubt. A legend? Perhaps not. But I imagine his medal collection provides all the consolation he needs.

Nice critique, though as I mentioned I seem to remember him being less good defensively than you obviously do. Maybe it's his subsequent efforts to look like a berk in the Graham Taylor documentary that's clouded my objectivity.

How he ever managed to arrive unseen on the end of attacks during his bubble perm period I'll never know.

Surely Hughes on the left, Carra on the right and Thommo in the middle.

And your team looks very narrow.

I'm not convinced you thought it through properly.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
