Who will be our next captain?

This is something i've been thinking about for a few weeks now, at some point in the next few years we're going to need a new captain and I wanted to know who you all could see stepping up from our current squad.

Now thinking about how out of control the agger thread got when Skunk thought I was having a go at Carragher (I wasn't), I would just like to say that even though as a person I think Gerrard is a f*****g a$$hole, as a player no one can argue with what he's done for us over the past few years and that he seems to be a great captain..

    So, three questions:-

    1) Which players in the current squad could step up?

    2) Will Gerrard go the way of Hypia and hand over the captaincy to someone else? - I personally couldn't see this happening

    3) Will Gerrard stay until he retires?

Personally I would love to see Mascherano as our next captain, he is by far my favourite player and for me he should be the first name on the team sheet, or maybe second behind Torres!

But he's just said he doesn't think he would be a good captain for Argentina so maybe he wouldn't want to be our captain either...

FFS Lighten up. This is a forum. What's the harm in a bit of idle chit chat?
I have one word to offer - honesty. I couldn't be devious if I tried. Joe Fagan.

            Spot on.

I love the way he says 'I would just like to say that even though as a person I think Gerrard is a f*****g a$$hole' - as if he knows Gerrard personally.

That is one of the worst posts I have read on this forum ever. You say Gerrard is a ****ing Asshole as a person, do you know him on a personal level?

And you say Hyypia handed the captaincy to Gerrard, well get your fact rights. Houllier took it off him and gave it to Gerrard. Hyypia said in interviews he was disappointed.

I recommend a forum for you, it's called red cafe or something. Google it. You clearly belong there.

Ok, I don't know Gerrard personally, but I know alot of people who live in the city who live around where he grew up and he's known for not being fan friendly and for being a prat at times.

saj - you're right Hypia didn't just hand over the captaincy, but I meant what you meant, I just didn't put a great deal of thought into that one line.

I'm not trying to be a WUM, I am mearly asking who if anyone in the current squad has the leadership ability to be captain next?

                Everyone needs to chill out.

Come on guys, lighten up and give the guy a break, ffs theres nothing controversial here, who gives a **** if he thinks Gerrard is a ****ing arsehole? Personally I think hes a miserable cunt but that doesnt take away from the fact hes a legendary lfc captain and player.

****ing hell, it is a forum and its a decent enough thread.

Personally Id like the next captain to be preferably a scouser, but failing that someone who has a real presence on the pitch and who can change games. Sometimes the team needs dragging up to standard and the captain should be the one to do it, much like Stevie does at times now. Candidates, well Mascherano, Agger/Skrtel maybe, maybe a new signing or youth teamer? Theres not going to be a shortage is there as Rafa seems to be putting together a team of captains.

This was the kind of response I was looking for! I agree that ideally a local should be captain, but I can't think of any local up and coming lads (playing for any prem team) that I would want as captain and until the issues between the academy and Rafa are resolved I can't see may lads coming up from the academy.

I think Skrtel would be my preference over Agger, although they are both very early on in their careers I think Skrtel has shown more of the qualities a captain needs so far than Agger has.

I wouldn't want Torres as captain, I don't think he enjoyed the pressure in Madrid and I think the freedom from that is one of the reasons why he has played so well for us.

I take it back Darth seems to think its ok .. so ehhh ok then ...

Xabi seems the natural choice for me if all the behind the scenes malarkey gets patched up. He strikes me as a natural leader of men, he comes from great footballing stock and he can lead by example, he'd be captain in most other clubs. I would prefer not to see Torres as captain, not a huge fan of strikers as captains
