Who will be our next captain?

I think central defenders make the best captains - they can see everything in front of them (except the goalkeeper of course - but every good defender has eyes in the back of his head). So I would pick a central defender personally. Carra - he'll be round for a good while yet

I know a couple of people who know Gerrard and i can assure you far from being an ****ing asshole as you put it. They say he is a top bloke! Just because he does not stop for every fan does not make an asshole.Originally posted by ukfootballfan101 View PostThis is something i've been thinking about for a few weeks now, at some point in the next few years we're going to need a new captain and I wanted to know who you all could see stepping up from our current squad.
Now thinking about how out of control the agger thread got when Skunk thought I was having a go at Carragher (I wasn't), I would just like to say that even though as a person I think Gerrard is a f*****g a$$hole, as a player no one can argue with what he's done for us over the past few years and that he seems to be a great captain..
So, three questions:-
1) Which players in the current squad could step up?
2) Will Gerrard go the way of Hypia and hand over the captaincy to someone else? - I personally couldn't see this happening
3) Will Gerrard stay until he retires?
Personally I would love to see Mascherano as our next captain, he is by far my favourite player and for me he should be the first name on the team sheet, or maybe second behind Torres!
But he's just said he doesn't think he would be a good captain for Argentina so maybe he wouldn't want to be our captain either...

As for next captain im sure Steve will be around for a good while yet so in say 5 years time nobody has any idea who will be at liverpool so its impossible to say.

A few people have mentioned Reina, I think thats a good call, he is a huge presence in the Spanish squad, did anyone see him introducing each member of the squad to the stage in Madrid during the euro 08 celebrations, plus as a keeper he could in theory be first choice until he's getting close to 40.
I've done a bit of research and here are our longest serving captains:-
1) Alex Raisbeck 1899 - 1909 - 10 years
2) Ron Yeats 1961 - 1970 - 9 years
3) Donald Mackinlay 1921 - 1928 7 years
4) Ste Gerrard - 2003 - 6 years up to now.
Since Emilyn Hughes in 1973 no player has been captain for more than 3 years in one continous period.
So maybe I shoudl re-phrase my question - Will Gerrard go on to become our longest serving captain?

I was only discussing who could be out next captain after Gerrard with a mate the other day, out of our current squad we both agreed Mascherano is the ideal candidate obviously depending on if he's still here after Gerrard hangs up his boots.
Gerrard will be captain as long as he's playing for us IMO so we're a long way off having to decide on a new captain. You only have to look at what he's done for us since he's been made captain, he stepped up to the plate big time when Houllier made him captain, i can't remember the amount of times he's almost single handedly rescued us in games and he's gone on to become an outright legend in the eyes of most liverpool fans so calling him a ****ing arsehole isn't going to sit well with fans.We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

Agree. And as I posted elsewhere, I think he will. He's playing catch up though, the education he got from the academy didn't really prepare him to play in a Rafa team, but he has everything else you need. He may break through later than you would like, but I think he'll make it.Originally posted by cled the red View PostHe'll have to make the grade first to stand any chance!!!The Crushing Machine MKII
