You've obviously not seen his shooting stats. They are dire. 3/4 are off target and 1/32 lead to goals. For someone of his class it's unbelievable, I was gobsmacked when I saw that.

Mascherano is one of my favourite players, his tough tackling no nonsense style make him one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and the way he prowls the midfield in front of the back four breaking down other teams attacks allows more offensive midfielders to push forward.

However, in the past few games I've noticed an increasing number of examples of him making forward runs or starting off an attacking with a decent/intelligent pass.

Has anyone else noticed this? There were a few examples in the west brom game in the opening 60 minutes.

alonso is class and there is a marked difference in our play when he is on the pitch. in the same way people don't measure kuyt or masch by their goal scoring people shouldn't judge alonso this way.

he has stepped up his game this year and as far as i can tell has played better than masch and is at least comparable to gerrard's performances.

Have to agree with rage on that one. A bit hypocritical to say players like Masch and Kuyt offer more to the team than goals but then fail to apply the same principal to Alonso who is exactly the same, in the sense that he is there to create play rather than finish moves off.
