Liverpool fc to open football centre in India

There could soon be more Indians dreaming of the tricolor fluttering at the football World Cup. When ‘Soccer Prince’, the first ever football reality show hunting for budding football talent kicks off on Indian TV screen, it will have a distinct Pune touch.

That is because Liverpool, the renowned English soccer club, is planning to set up a football development centre at Pune, the first of its kind in India. And feeding this centre with talent would be the resource pool thrown up by this reality show.

Ian Ayre, the commercial director of Liverpool and Steve Bellis, the director of the global football promotion firm ‘kickworldwide’ shared plans of this unique endeavor with reporters here on Tuesday. Also present was Vishwjeet Kadam, the host of the proposed football development centre.

“The policy decision to kick off the football revolution has been finalised. We are working out the modalities. An official announcement will be made within a month,” said Ayre.

‘Soccer prince’ is already a hit on Chinese television with more than 20,000 taking part in the show. The Indian model of ‘soccer prince’ aims at attracting more teenage soccer players, said Bellis, the main brain behind the show.

Outlining the nature of the Indian version of ‘soccer prince’, Bellis said talks were on with one of the leading media houses to telecast the show.

“Our goal is to provide a platform for football players from the grassroots as we will be rolling it out in hundreds of schools, colleges and football clubs. Like their Chinese counterparts, winners of this reality show will get a chance to train for one year with leading clubs in England,” he said.

Ayre said merely setting up a professional football league would not help the cause of improving the overall standard of Indian football. “The whole system has to be professional and receptive. The proposed football centre will strive to create this kind of infrastructure. It will project football as a lucrative career option not just as a player, but as a manager, coach, administrator and support staff as well.”

“Only merchandising Liverpool products in Indian market will not serve the purpose. The aim is to create the right ambience for football in the country and ultimately produce local football heroes like Sachin Tendelkar is for cricket,” Ayre said.

i'm don't buy into this making money out of the asian market. isn't asia where 98% of all counterfeit kits are produced? most of the population isn't going to able to afford to pay £40 for a genuine article.

I just think it'd be good for India to produce a decent player or two to raise the profile of the game, to have role models and give hope to others. Japan and China have developed quality players over recent years so why not India?

I'm sure if we went on tour, we could gain money from that too. Clothing isn't the only thing which can make us money - tv deals, supporter clubs coming to Liverpool, possible sponsorships from India

What? All them hundreds and thousands of pounds?

This is more of a long term project.

Long term indeed, try to make Liverpool fans out of the Indian Population is the idea, or as many of them as is possible anyway.

                    It'll be China next.

                        Waste of time.

Should have set it up in Sth America were they actually produce decent footballers.

I assume you are extremely naive about your knowledge of India? Some facts for you

                            1. A lot of people associate India with poverty. Yes there are a lot of very poor people in India but a stupid amount of mega rich people too. Four of the top eight billionaires in the world are from India. These billionaires love to associate themselves with any thing from the West.
                            2. You get more live Premier League games shown on TV in India then you do in the UK
                            3. Its one of the fastest growing Economies in the World, there's a lot of money to be made there
                            4. Indian People love Football (playing and watching, not as much as Cricket but the appetite is there) - they just need some encouragement to help them make they grade.
                            5. There are shed loads of Liverpool fans in India. I've walked round with my reds shirt whilst over there I was surprised by how many people instantly recognised it and could reel off players, results, history.

I think this has the potential to be a very good investment/way of discovering some talent
This city has two great football teams – Liverpool and Liverpool reserves

I'm with Harv on this one. Why not open a football centre in Brazil? It's definately possible and at least it's a football nation. No offence to any Indian people, but the Indians aren't really renowned for their footballing abilities. If the Indians/asians who grow up in this country playing alongside English people aren't good enough, how the hell are the Indians in India going to be good enough? Their national team is porbably not even in the Fifa top 100 rankings and can anyone even name a single Indian club team? The top Indian footballer a few years ago signed for Bury. He was called something like Bhutia. He flopped heavily despite the fact he was the best player in India.

In terms of dww's comment (I'm assuming you're being sarcastic). The market in South America has been tapped big time by every country in Europe (Be it Romania, Spain, Russia or England). Teams like Real Madrid (and ourselves) are happy to cherry pick some of the established up and and coming South Americans and pay a huge sum for them. But no team that I know of in Europe has actually set up a football centre. I think it would be pretty revolutionary and amazing. Just imagine the talent we could potentially develop in a football centre in Brazil and not have to worry about having to millions for them
