Such a high population and a decent following of football and the premier league especially really surprised there aren't more players of Indian origin playing in England or around Europe.

      Saj, dude!!! WTF?!!

The problem with getting Asian footballers through the ranks has eff-all to do with physique etc.. it is purely down to the unfortunate FACT that most asian parents still do not take football seriously as a career option for their children.

When an asian child is about 10 years old the thought of him joining an academy is seen as a hindrance to his education, thus the decent players are often left to play in school teams and not much outside of school.

It is at this tender age that asian parents need to trust and send the kids with genuine talent to the academies. It is much harder for 15 or 16 year olds to break through without that grounding from the early age.

It will happen but it may take another generation.

Excellent move by Liverpool to open this centre - at least it shows they have some faith.

While I do agree to the whole 'parents not giving support' to asian kids is true, it more more often than not just an excuse people are using. I truly don't think the asians are good enough. As I said earlier, I've played with a lot of asian kids from all over the UK and I've only ever met a one who is exceptional, one who would possibly make it as a footballer. I've been a match for most. I've found that a lot of the asian's seem to half decent in 5 a side where the game is more technical, but get the same players to play in a 11 a side game and they struggle as there's more to dribbling and quick passes in 11 a side. And genetics do play a big part in determining how good a person may/may not be - it's documented everywhere and I even did a Science subject on this matter for my GCSE's. Why are the best sprinter's black? Why do the best long do the best runners come from Africa (yes I know altitude plays a big part in this)? Why are the most technical footballers from Brazil? It's not just coincidence.

And yes, there will be british asian's in the premiership one day, but that day is probably at least 10-20 years. But I think there is a higher likelihood of winning the lottery than seeing an Indian born and bred person making it at Liverpool FC. I'd like to be more optimistic on this matter, but facts are facts. It is quite frankly pointless opening a football center in India. The far east or even America would be much more attractive proposition.

There isn't a decent following at all in India given the size of the pooulation - my mate lived there for 9 months and he loved the fact there was numerous premiership games on the TV there but not many of the locals in the region he lived in gave **** about football. It will obviously get popular in time though

            Eh?

If this isn't a joke then you are mental. I can promise you that there are far more white English than Australians in London.

this will work for several reasons:

                1. there is an absolutely massive pool of talent to choose from and the more competition the better.

                2. In such a massive pool, surely some indians must be over the the average 5 8" height (even the chinese have a decent basket ball team and im sure they're not all 5 4") - no offence meant to anyone.

                3. the third and most critical point is that the best footballers (and sportsmen) are found in the worst economic conditions. Northings breeds sportsmen better than poverty - just look at the top players from all over the world - 99% of them come from the ghettos, the estates and townships. Top players arent found in universities or prep schools.

                4. india is football mad. There are huge parts of india that have proper soccer academies and where football is the main sport as opposed to cricket. It doesnt have to be either or because cricket in summer and football in winter can work well. Powerpack was right in that liverpool and united are massive in india and its only a matter of time before they produce a decent footballer.

That fella bhaijang bhutia was supposed to be the indian michael owen but didnt quite have the phsyique for the job.

The liverpool fc academy is a great idea and it wouldnt cost too much to run over there and cater for a thousand kids or so. The profesionalism we have over here will be well appreciated over there in terms of training, diet and tactics.

Its a great idea and one that should have been thought of earlier. But dont expect to see the new fernandojit or gerrardpinder for the forseeable future. The first batch will be pants and within 7-10 years im sure that decent talented footballers will be found.

Just being flippant - there used to be a running joke in London that most bar staff were Australian.....I don't really think most 'whites' are Aussies in London, just trying to be as daft and make as many sweeping generalisations as the original post.

I've played football in India - pretty good games as it goes....quite a lot of talent on show

I know about the London thing - I work there - it wasn't a serious point.

I lived there for 21 years and there is quite a decent following of PL in India. In my uni pretty much 50- 60 % of them were following PL footy. Agreed that a majority of India would not have heard of the PL. But remember that due to the sheer size of the population even a minority following is enough to give a significant fan size. Judging by the way the interest in growing in a few years there will be a significant following in the 4 major metros and 15 other smaller cities.
