There was no way we were going to ger Ashavin, for a number of reason:-
1. If we'd shown any interest the prices would have rocketed, Zenit would have done whatever they had to, to start a bidding war. The only reason Arsenal were able to drive the price down was because no one else was bidding for him.
2. From what i've seen he plays quite centrally - where Gerrard plays, I would prefer gerrard personally!!
3. Zenit wanted a big chunk of cash up front, we could probably raise the cash to pay in installments but I don't think we have the cash to pay out around £10m up front.
Personally I don't think we need him, IMO the most important signing we need to make is a creative right-sided midfielder that could play in a 3 of Riera, Gerrard and whoever. The next signings I would like to see are:-
- another left sided midfielder (competition for Riera)
- A striker (rumour has it we're trying to sign Kerrison from brazil 22 goals in 30 league games last season)
- A right back (competition for Arbeloa)
- A left back (assuming Dossena is and Aurelio keeps getting injured we need someone to fight Insua for a place in the 1st team)

Its just rafa and his overall mentality with regards to the attitude the team take on the pitch. He is first and foremost a defensively minded coach whose emphasis is more on not conceding as opposed to scoring. The only two out and attacking players we have are stevie and nando. Kite is just a hard worker. Riera isnt bad, mind you.
its only when we go behind that rafa and the squad have no choice but to take the shackles off and go for it. I posted a thread not long ago about attacking more. We should.President of the Ban Smileys Society

The problem is that we cant break teams down when they put men behind the ball. And that many teams do this to us, resulting in loads of dropped points, which cost us a chance at being champions.Originally posted by Elvis View PostI think we're an attacking team. Look at Everton if you want to see a defensive team. We're just not gung-ho. We score more goals than most in the PL, so I don't see a problem.
So yeah, if you look at the bigger picture and if our ambition is to win the title, then there is indeed a problem.

We dont at at all in the first half unless we go a goal behind, we might as well play 45 minute matches.
I dont understand bein cautious, we have better players than most teams and if we attacked and it was an open game we would have won far more than what we have.
We play not to lose which is good for cup competitions but it wont win you titles.

it's wrong (ish). What really happens is that we do attack teams from the kick off but if we've not scored after 10-20 mins we take our foot of the gas, let the other teams come into it.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostWe only ever really go for it, when we're behind?
It's a common trait of our side. Boro at home, it takes us to go behind before we push forward. Wigan at home, the same thing. Hull at home, 2-0 down, we go for it. Back to 2-2, we stop. Hell, even Istanbul was the same.
Generally speaking, we dont actually push forward with any real purpose - until we go behind. And of course, like tonight, sometimes you go behind when it's too late to rectify it.
This mentality is seriously risky and not one of champions, i'm afraid.
Before people slate me, actually look at the evidence and ask yourself honestly if you can make a genuine case for this viewpoint being wrong.
My own opinion is that it could be a timing issue. I think Rafa likes to try to nick an early goal and if it doesn't come just wear down the opposition, tire them out by making them chase the ball and then hit them hard in the final 15-20 mins. I am sure he has some stats to suggest this is the best approach..
personally I'd rather we just attacked throughout.Last edited by BG1973; 06-02-09, 03:14 PM.

I always thought the ethos of this club was the attractive football we played, the pass and move. This seems to have been eroding away slowly since Houllier set foot in the club and Rafa has tried to address the issue but not enough IMO.
Personally I think every Liverpool Manager should have as part of their remit the objective of making us play attractive attacking footiball.
IMO it is a shame, a real effin shame that Arsenal and Scum have taken the mantle from us of playing the most attractive attacking football.
At times this season we have shown we can do it, but then we play with a discipline and mechanical approach that I just cannot comprehend."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

To clarify, i dont mind whether our football is as attractive as Arsenal or as boring as...well our own. I want us to attack because that way, we're more likely to score the goals that have been absent in our ****e 0-0 draws, and consequently win more games.
I just want to win the title, i couldnt give a **** how we do it.

Personally I think that was crap about Chelsea under Mourinho. They did play good football, and had excellent width with Robben/A Cole, Wright-Phillips/J Cole/Ferreira.Originally posted by REDrascal View PostBut wasn't the problem people had with Maureen that his teams were'nt playing attractive football, that didn't stop him or the Chavs having aspirations of winning the title, nor did it stop them winning the title, it's more to do with players imo.
We just do not play football properly. Sounds bizarre but honestly it depresses me when I see the mentality of some of our players when in possession. The obvious one is the Carra run forward to the halfway line, panic, turn/trap the ball and pass it back or square.
How many times when we have possession around the box do we pass the ball back to the midfield area? Too many.
There are players who, thankfully, have a natural positive mentality when on the ball, e.g. Gerrard, Torres, Arbeloa and Pepe. However there too many who get the hot potatoe syndrome on the ball and the easy way out is a back pass.
My point is that I feel our style of play is hindering us big time. With a tweak here and there we could really develop and become a truly formidable football team."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

Robben. Apparently playing his socks off at the moment too..just great timing that is.Originally posted by Tee View PostPersonally I think that was crap about Chelsea under Mourinho. They did play good football, and had excellent width with Robben/A Cole, Wright-Phillips/J Cole/Ferreira.

Hot potato syndrome has more to do with character i feel, some players just can't handle playing for LFC, and the expectation placed on them, the pressure of not winning a title gets bigger every season, especially now 'they' are so close.
And yes, some are just not good enough, but we cant afford a team of Torres's and Gerrards.Last edited by Vermilion; 06-02-09, 04:55 PM.
