I really find this whole transfer values discussion quite tiring - we are always arguing from a point of complete ignorance and there are so many factors involved in the transfers that mean that any number of claims can be at least temporarily true.

Yeah it's not a bad site but Torres' fee is inflated by about £8 million.

Benitez should keep quiet. His outbursts are bordering on embarrassing at this stage - he's not even checking his numbers. If he had spent better we'd be doing better. After another wimpy performance he says 'We need to beat Manchester Utd at Old Trafford now.' We always did need to beat them - if anything that statement puts added pressure on Liverpool. There was supposedly an agreement to defer his contract discussions until the end of the season but he decided to raise the issue midway through the season when we were doing well. That saga, in addition to other infantile rants, are not helping the team at all.

Last time I checked, Rafael Benitez was still the manager of Liverpool Football Club. Assuming he still is then I think it would be good if people phrased their criticism of his management more carefully.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Very true. And had he spent worse we'd be doing worse. I really can't see the point. I think overall in the transfer market Rafa has done well. There have been a few disasters, and a few major hits. But thats the game.

I personally will have a clearer picture of his success 9transer wise) in about 5 years when we see how many of the young players make it into the squad, and see how the likes of Lucas and N'gog turn out.

                EDIT:

On the subject of transers I would say that if Benitez suddenly sold EVERY player he had bought, for fair market value, we would be looking at a very tidy profit. Torres alone would probably wipe out the current deficit................

He hasnt done well at all. A handful of good players doesnt mean he's done well. Anyone can do well. I guess you could go through each season and see which of the players he's kept that he's bought and how many have gone out, now go and compare them to UTDs purchases and which ones they've sold straight after for being useless. You'll find Benitez has screwed up heaps. Trying to fix EVERY position in 1 season wont work. Pool the funds into 2-3 huge buys instead of a half dozen.

I'm not sure we have had a squad where it has been clear that single big player gambles would have been better than the attempts at incremental improvements in multiple positions. Comparisons with the likes of United who have had the same manager with many years to build a solid base of the type of players he wants in the squad (and to make mistakes in early years about the qualities required to implement their vision in the PL). The fact is that a/ most of Rafa's buys haven't been useless although a number of them have failed to live up to expectations/hopes and b/ we have had to compete for trophies every season and have largely done so if less in the PL and to do so we have needed a big squad.

It's imperative Rafa stays for 4 more years; we'll do a Newcastle if he goes.

It takes time to build a dynasty and we're definitely moving in the right direction. If we had the money to splash £30m on a superstar, I'm sure Rafa would have done it. He's done it with Torres.

Dear God. You want the mancs to reach 22 league titles then?

                          Did he really say that?

Answer: no, he didn't say it and to even raise the issue like that indicates a ridiculous extrapolation of the facts based on nothing but your own unjustified faith in your own judgement.

Then again we're used to it by now.

Maybe you could learn to say your piece and then let others have a go rather than hogging both football forums with posts of dubious intellectual value and even less interest. I don't know why the mods allow it; it's f*cking ruining the board for me.

Would someone please quote my post because "Craig" has me on ignore.

The thing is I do sympathise and understand 'Craig's' frustrations. However, it is boring the **** out of me reading that negative ****e day after day, no offence mate.

I am pissed off with some of the things Rafa has done but at the end of the day he is the one who has to make these decisions and you know what, he has also made some cracking decisions this season.

FFS we are still in the CL and going for the title. And that is a FACT!!!!!

The whole money thing is boring now. Rafa's not exactly been a pauper has he? I'm not saying he's been backed as well as he would be at Citeh either, but I do wish he stop with the excuses. There was a thread I started a while back about money, and even though some decent points were made to back up the fact that Rafa had more work to do in the first place, it's undeniable that he's had plenty to spend. He'd have you believe we were bloody Everton.

Don't you guys get it though - to take us that final step we need that extra money and that is a FACT.

With what Rafa is spending right now it is a fight to get a CL place every season. Yes it will keep us competitive but to actually win the league we need to be able to beat the top teams to the top players.

If we could compete with the Mancs and Chavs for the very top players we would have already won the league under Rafa IMO.
