Indeed , and we will be in a battle to finish 4th again.
Will Rafa have a job come tmrw morning?
IMO, and this is not necessarily what I actually want, Rafa will not sign a new contract and probably won’t be in charge come the start of next season.
It's at the stage now for me, that irrespective of what he does in Europe, I think Rafa has to go because it's becoming patently obvious that he simply does not have what it takes to engineer a meaninfgul league challenge.
2005 made us all believe it was just a matter of time until he'd assemble his own squad and take us to no19 but that time has now elapsed, and players have arrived at no little cost, and genuinely we are really no closer than we were under Houllier. The gap between Europe and Premierleague is a chasm that Rafa cannot bridge, even if he knew how he'd likely be too stubborn to change anyway.
We could win Europe this year and I wouldn't change my mind. Rafa will never take us to a league title because his tactics that are perfect for Europe - keep it 0-0 and nick one over two legs to win it - are just deplorably unsuitable for the domestic league.
I've never once advocated getting rid of Rafa until today, but now for me, his time is up. Europe is great, but we all want the league and it's just not going to happen with this manager.
