Keane — Rafa and I not suited

    Sky Sports, 18th March 2009

Robbie Keane believes he would have enjoyed a successful career at Liverpool had a different manager been in charge.

Rafa Benitez brought Keane to Anfield last summer but the Republic of Ireland international was given few opportunities to impress.

He was not a regular starter and was surprisingly left on the substitutes' bench at times when he appeared to be a good option for the Reds.

Keane, who secured a swift move back to Tottenham in the winter transfer window, insists he made the right decision to join Liverpool.

But he admits he was perhaps not suited to working with Benitez, and has hinted that he would have liked to be treated with more respect.

"Of course I wish it had gone differently, but I have no regrets," Keane told Icon magazine.

"I do believe with a different manager it would have worked for me, but different managers have different methods and some have different ideas than those you are used to or believe in.

"People have their own opinions of Benitez. I have nothing against him and will leave people to make their own minds up about him.

"When you've been around for a while as a player, all you want is a bit of respect and to be treated the way you feel you deserve to be."

    Strachan praise

Keane claims the best manager he has ever played under is Gordon Strachan, who signed him for Coventry in 1999.

Keane was still a teenager when he joined the Sky Blues and he believes Strachan helped him fulfil his potential.

"My time at Coventry was very important," Keane explained.

"I got to work with Gordon Strachan, the best manager I have ever played for.

"He is a fantastic man-manager who has always known how to get the best out of a player."

Exactly. What a tit. I’d suggest Mr Keane was the problem here, not Benitez. I’m sick of Keane’s extremely thinly-veiled digs at Rafa. You were a failure pal, get over it.

                Yeah but so was Curbishley.

I actually think that Strachan is as good a manager as O'Neill pretty much and when and a lot of people were in favour of him as our next manager when doubting Benitez was in fashion.

keane is basically showing him self up as a bit of a tosser imo. he had a good few chances and proved he wasnt good enough. after that, rafa preferred different options. end of story.

wonder how harry feels that robbie prefers strachan to him...

He's got a big heart but he's tactically inept and it didn't suit him being a squad member, he's too used to being the leading man. That, and the fact he missed 5 or 6 open goals in half a season for us. Wish him luck though as long as he can get over it.

I don't think his comments are as bad as some make out. He has gone back to Spurs and proven, to himself at least, that whatever it was that was different in his approach before he came here works better for him. He is right he didn't work well with Rafa, I suspect he just isn't up to the highest level but we will never know either way. If he was asked a direct question I don't think the answers he gives there are that bad really.

We all know the debates on here as to whether he was given enough chances, or the right chances. It seems perfectly fair for the player himself to come down on his own side.

I think Strachan was actually interviewed, as well as Curbishley - but they had set their minds on Benitez.

                        Thank ****.

Why is this in the news? Its like Rooney's comments. Seems like a quiet day on Fleet Street.

Keane's admittance that he can only work with managers who blow smoke up his arse, is quite a sad state of affairs to Keane.

He is doing it at spurs.....but he is still missing sitters
