    Those of you who wanted

Martin O'Neil as our manager bow your heads in shame and go and join the buffons who wanted us to sign Darren Bent instead of Torres.

It was like watching the old Wimbledon play, I'm sure at some point in the 2nd half I saw Wally Downes launch one towards the head of John Fashanu.

O'Neil has always been a long ball merchant and as for playing a RB in Luke Young at LB and picking Nigel Reo-I've always been **** but thought I was the bollocks Coker at RB while you have a LB in Nicky Shorey that you've spent circa 8 mill on warming the bench is clearly all the signs of a manager capable of running our club.

The only shame is that I can't see them getting anything at OT and that Arsenal will finish in the top 4

    So are we now.

Only we got Xabi like accuracy from the majestic Pepe.

(By the way, keep meaning to ask any of our Spanish speaking members, how do you get Pepe from Jose Manuel?)
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I always thought because Jose's first full name was Josepa and it was shortened.

A bit harsh, don't really get the Wimbledon comparison and Villa have been quite good to watch at times this season.

As for long balls, seems an odd criticism considering we've done pretty well out of them ourselves over the past couple of games, don't you think!?

I'm guilty of wanting Mourinho or Hiddink in for Rafa, but thankfully never O'Neill. I've always considered him overrated since his Leicester days in the same way as Allardyce and even H. Redknapp are now.

I would love it if he ended up at manure as Demento's replacement.

I don't see the point in creating a thread to denigrate another team's manager in the Liverpool section.

For the record, I still think Martin O'Neill is a very good manager and plays some great attacking football with two out-and-out wingers. He inherited a very weak Villa team and in short period of time has turned them round to be challenging the top four.

We have a very special manager, unfortunately many on this forum and on similar forums, only appreciate this fact during good times and call for his head during lean.

I wish people could differentiate between a long ball and a long pass. Long balls are hoofed in the general direction of a target man (Skrtel's at OT was neither, it was a clearance). On MOTD2 last night, Dixon referred to Dirk's pass to Riera and Pepe's pass also to Riera as "long balls".

I suppose Glenn Hoddle was a long-ball merchant, as is Xabi Alonso.

I was hoping for something a bit more exotic.

They launch the ball up to Carew or Heskey and now Carew and Heskey, their best run of results came with Carew out injured before they bought Heskey when he was forced to play Agbonlahor up front on his own and pushed Milner and Young further forward into a 4-5-1 come 4-3-3. With everyone fit and available he goes back to launching it, I work with a Villa season ticket holder and he says the football is the worst they have seen in years, the jeers last week weren't aimed at Agbonlahor they were aimed at O'Neil because they are baffled by his selections and tactics.

That is a Universe away from what you seem to think we do, do you honestly think we mindlessly launch it onto Torres' head???
Maybe you haven't seen us carve apart Madrid, Man U and Villa in the last week or so with decent, fast attacking football.

I would like to apologise to DeeTheDog for posting in the wrong forum, I'm off to self administer a thousand lashings.

Long ball/long pass, if there is a difference then its very subjective.

To me a 'ball' or a pass are the same thing regardless of the distance they travel. Thats why I don't see a problem with playing long balls if the are delivered with the accuracy and quality of the examples you mentioned.

It's not really though mate, not in the way it's been described in this thread anyway. If you see a man in space and knock it long to him then that's completely different than hitting it long in the general direction of someone so that they can win a challenge to gain posession further up the field. If they actually have to win a challenge to get the ball then it could be argued posession was lost and won again.

I'd never though about the terminology before but long ball and long pass seem to split the two well enough.
