Not that it means a jot - we're quick to dismiss it when it doesn't favour us - but the headlines and coverage are all about us.

    Oliver Holt:

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/footba...5875-21278953/

Liverpool did not surrender meekly last night. No matter what the odds against them, there was never a chance of that. Never ever.

Not with everyone of them wearing a black armband to remind them of the heavy significance of today's date.

Not with their loyal supporters massed at The Shed End of Stamford Bridge and their banners of remembrance draped proudly over the hoardings between the two tiers.

Not with Steven Gerrard, their captain, who lost a young cousin at Hillsborough, sitting in the directors' box with club officials, gripped by the action even though he was missing the game through injury.

Not with Jamie Carragher, a man who feels the heartbeat of his city every time he plays, taking Gerrard's place at the head of his side and playing like a rock in the centre of their defence.

Liverpool's players set out to pay tribute to the 96 fans who died at the Leppings Lane End last night by striving to overturn what seemed like an insurmountable deficit and recreate the Miracle of Istanbul.

And even though emotions will be raw at Anfield this afternoon when a memorial service will be held to honour those who were killed, there was also something intensely moving about the events that unfolded in west London last night.

This is a Liverpool team for whom the impossible has become almost routine in the European Cup but, nevertheless, there was something magical about what occurred in the first half in particular.

Rafa Benitez, the Liverpool manager, may not be a particularly emotional man and many of his players may have no connection to what happened at Hillsborough.

But Benitez has a special bond with this club and its supporters.

You only needed to see them carrying icons of him through the streets of the city when his job was under threat to realise that.

Or to see the emotion on the face of his wife, Montse, when the Kop sings You'll Never Walk Alone to know that managing Liverpool is more than just a job to Benitez and his family. However cold and analytical he can be, he will have made sure that each of his players knew that today is the most important day in Liverpool's season, the day when the city comes together in mourning and in grief.

And in continuing anger for the justice they have not yet achieved for those who died.

That is why another banner hung among the Liverpool fans.

It did not mention Hillsborough but its sub-text was clear. It said simply 'Defiance'.

And that is what Liverpool showed last night. They were quite magnificent in their defiance. Wonderful in their point-blank refusal to accept they were chasing a lost cause.

And so, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the darkest day in the club's history, its players set about trying to achieve one of its most heroic results.

Real acts of heroism, of course, occurred on the pitch at Hillsborough two decades ago as Liverpool fans did everything they could to aid the dead and dying. But in a football context, Liverpool's indefatigability at the home of their bitter rivals on this night of all nights was inspiring to witness.

They may not have mustered a shot for the first 10 minutes but they soon made up for that.

Without their captain John Terry and intimidated by the sense of mission that Liverpool carried with them into the game, Chelsea froze.

Fabio Aurelio and Xabi Alonso, with a penalty, scored inside half an hour and suddenly disbelief spread around Stamford Bridge as the visiting fans went wild.

People stared at each other open-mouthed as the possibility that Liverpool could pull off another of the greatest football comebacks of all time grew closer.

But their epic pursuit faltered when goals from Didier Drogba, Alex and Frank Lampard made it 3-2 on the night.

But Liverpool would not give up. Never ever. Not last night.

Lucas scored to make it 3-3 and the pursuit began again. Then Dirk Kuyt put them 4-3 up. Even when Lampard scored again, Liverpool never gave up.

Not on one of the most remarkable nights of European football history. Never. Not last night.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

It was a massive error. He is a keeper and it is his job to judge and anticiapate what is going to happen. He should have been ready in case someone got a touch. A keeper should never, ever, be beaten at his near post. It should be covered at all times.

I would ask you to compare that goal to the one where an attacking player will drift the ball across to the far corner. Keepers will occasionly be made to look foolish as they don't know whether to go acoss and cover the ball, or stay where they are in case another attacker running in gets a head to it and changes the course of the ball. If that had happend then fair enough. But the initial coss was not going in, nor was there any other attacking players in the box. He simply had to cover his near post and then collect the ball. He messed up.

Apart from that we made Chelsea fight for it and it is good for the belief of the team.
As I said last week, Carra was not rubbish and he was not tired. He was just up against the only striker in world football who can physichally over power him. It was his job to mark him and he did it well in the first half. In the second Drogba upped his game, and allied to the fact he was diving everywhere Carra found it tough. Drogba and Henry are the only players I've ever seen Carra struggle with, for different reasons.

Ah well, we'll just have to win the league instead now.
Rafa got more right than wrong tonight. Nobodys perfect. As the ITV commentator said late on "I bet he wished he could bring Torres back on now!"

Hindsight is a great thing, and the great thing about football forums is that you will get so many different opinions that someone will always get it right and turn around and say "I told you so". They will forget to mention the 100 other times they were wrong and will act the smart ass. Makes me laugh, makes others curse.

Massively proud, the lads fought til the end and never gave up.

But for a complete **** of a ref, we'd have pulled that off tonight.

Aside from everything else, tonight just re-affirmed how proud i am to be a Red and not one of those retarded cavemen chelsea cunts.

A more clueless 'dont get it' set of fans, you'll never come across.

I know both kind of fans at Chelsea. I know some of the boys who were supporting them in the days of Kerry Dixon and Mark Stein. I also know the kind who started supporting when Zola came to town, and even worse, when Roman rocked up.

They have some fantastic fans, (like every club) but are full of the false hangers on, who instead of getting involved in the passion of the club expect victories to grow on trees.

As for the plastic flags, what a joke.

Kamikaze football. It was the Stamford Bridge version to the match between Manchester United and Porto. More to and fro than a match between the Lakers and the Spurs. Exciting to watch if you are a neutral, horrible if you are the manager.

Happy with the effort, not so with the clumsy defending and awful fouls. Didn't help with Drogba falling like he has been shot in Afghanistan.

If they can get a bit of back bone and recover from going out it would assist them in their chances of winning the title. But I think they could be affected at seeing their dreams go up in smokes.

I don't mind either way tomorrow. I just want them knocked out in the semis and I'd be happy enough.

I dont even know where to start with them.

"**** history, we're going to Rome" - do you not realise that it would form part of your history if you get there, you ****ing bellends?

"2-0 and you ****ed it up" - 2-0 would never have got us through anyway, so how did we '**** it up' ?

One of their songs, cant remember the words, but it lists the teams they hate - i think it was Spurs, West Ham and Liverpool. When did we become your rivals? Typical new age Chelsea fans.

Booing their team off at half time? Christ on a ****ing bike. And as for thousands of identical plastic flags and their contrived attempts at creating an atmosphere. Dear god. Their PA announcer mentioned their cup semi final at wembley - and to my disbelief, he actually said "and dont forget to take your flags!" Words failed me, all i could do was burst out laughing.

There's more that i cant remember now.

They'll obviously have their decent clued-up fans too but they're far far outweighed by the **** brigade.

They have a great team, (**** nothing club, but very good team) and 'supporters' like that dont deserve to have a great team.

I disagree with that. I though there was no ebb and flow to the game because of the constant whistling for fouls by the ref.

I've no idea how it ended up with 8 goals, other than shocking play by both defences and glaring errors by both Reina and Cech.

Tonight, it was like a match you would get in the 30s (ask Neil Young) It was shocking from both sides especially in the second half. Benitez's favourite word - control, was no where to be seen. Kamikaze football is only good if you have unbelievably quick and strong defenders. Skrtel was all over the joint and Carragher was absolutely cack tonight.

I have to agree with that, especially the 2nd half. The ref constantly blowing for absolutely nothing, chelsea antics and our defending. More shock than awe the 2nd half

I know it's high stakes, and people will try to win at all costs, but i really cant imagine being happy to win employing the tactics chelsea did. Diving, falling over, rolling around to waste time...just pure scum.

Hiddink's better than that, he should get out and gain some respect.

If there first goal wasnt allowed to go past our 2 defenders, I believe we would have won. Looks like im off to Rome to Messi lift the cup.
