I understand it feels like we should have won it from there but the only fact is our final league placing - the ups and downs over the course of the season simply add up to where the team finishes. It seems a reasonable position to argue that second (or third) isn't good enough over the course of the season but that's a completely different debate.

Yes, and assuming we come second, we failed. I won't be altering my view of the manager based on the league position at various points during the season, just the final position.

Over the season we scored x goals and won y points. It's not like we were run-away favourites at any point. History will say we challenged and came a close second (assuming we do). Using when we got the points as a basis for deciding on somethig such as whether our manager is good enough would be pretty irrational imo.

However, if at the start of the season 20 media pundits wrote down the expected finishing position of each team, I would say that so far we have over achieved on their predictions. And when you look at it that way, coming second is no disgrace.
