Spot on. So what if we're playing well and in the best form since 1989. Form counts for nothing if you're not winning any trophies (i.e. the premiership). To win, you need to improve the weak links in the team even if you're playing well and unfortunately Riera is one of our weakest links. When he was at Man City, I remember thinking that the guy could really cross a ball. But for some reason, he seems to have lost this ability. He gets himself into fantastic positions but yet his crossing is comparable with that of Mark Walters

Could everyone please leave out this sort of thing. Everyone here is a Liverpool fan and we like to have a diversity of opinion of these boards. This sort of post is really unhelpful in terms of maintaining the level of debate and diversity of points expressed.

            "Well, he's better than Babel".

            That's not the point.

Neither are good enough to start for a side looking to win the league.

Why is there such an issue about a player being discussed? FFS this is a Liverpool forum and if some people think Riera is not good enough than that is up to them.

FWIW I think he started brightly, then had a serious and worrying dip in form and only recently has started to look a bit more like his initial self. If he is still here next season, and I say if because clearly Rafa is looking at David Silva, then I expect a muc improved Riera.

Riera is a good player but the bottom line is the LM/LW position is one area we can still improve so it is a fair point of discussion IMO.

There are better players out there somewhere for almost all positions. If we had C. Ronaldo, Daniel Alves, a young Paolo Maldini and the new Lev Yashin (even Reina isn't the best in the world you know) we could win the league with Riera in the side. But, oh no, who we could scapegoat then?

Personally I think we'd have won the league if Torres and Gerrard had been fit all year even with Riera, Kuyt and, yes, occasionally even poor old Lucas playing in the team. So Torres' hamstrings and Gerrard's groin are also "not really good enough." Oh and Rafa is to blame because he didn't allow for injuries to those two by not signing Kaka' and Villa.

In short, Riera was not the reason we lost yesterday. Oh, wait a minute...

The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Clearly you just do not get my point.

Mountain out of a molehill syndrome or what.

Of course we can improve in most areas, but the point being made by me is that the LM/LW position has not been brilliant this season (or for a few years tbf). We have a player who initially looked like he was the solution, then had a dip in form and has comeback quite well but the question marks about his quality are still there.

It has nothing to do with finding scapegoats. Nothing whatsoever. You can bet your life that Rafa is looking to improve this and other areas of the team, so does that mean he is going to make scapegoats out of certain players? Of course not.

I tell you what, why don't we just shut the Liverpool discussion forum down seeing as we are doing so well? Just let Rafa get on with it eh?

No, I do get your point. I just don't get the point of a thread about Riera when we won yesterday and he played well, or at least well enough.

You clearly don't get my point which is that it's stupid to single out individual players in a f*cking team game unless you (or anyone else, since my post wasn't just directed at you) believe the only way we can win the league is by signing the best eleven players in their position in the world.

Of course Rafa is looking to improve the team - that's the way he does his job (in fact it pretty much is his job). And yes, I agree, why don't we - that's a good idea because there is no point in so many talking so much **** about football - see my signature.

Would love to agree but just cannot understand that point tbh.

Everything else I would agree with you.

And I just noticed your sig.

I meant to add, I totally agree with your comment about mountains and molehills. That's what a thread about Riera is (especially since yesterday he didn't do anything much wrong and we won) IMO.

What if it's actually not about a single game, and AA just simply doesnt rate Riera that highly?

We saw how good he could be at the start of the season but it seemed his fitness let him down in the middle. It could have been the cold or the "pace" of the premier league but he wasn't lasting 90 minutes in nearly every game he played mid-season. But it appears he's overcome that now and has got a sense of consistency about him even when he's dropped for the odd game.

Very decent second choice but we need something more from a regular starter.
