What an absolutely superb spot by Rafa and the coaching staff. He didn't play a single first team game for Boca Juniors. Rafa is getting some stick for Dossena in this thread yet not a peep of praise for this fantastic signing.

Hard to say whether Rafa or our scouting system should be praised here though.

Either way, I personally think he is already our best left back.

I meant 'scouting' rather than 'coaching' (duly edited now) - it's surely a combination of both. Doing their jobs brilliantly.

But surely Rafa and the coaching staff must have seen the lad training every day with us since and thought, "he's class and will be ready soon, we don't need another left back, especially with Aurelio at the club".

Yet we went out and bought Dossena. I just don't get it.

I think the answer is fairly obvious to anyone who sees Rafa deal with young players (IMO). Regardless of how good they are he does not like to blood young players too early. He likes them to develop slowly and then come into the side on a regular basis with plenty of experience. Keeps their feet on the ground and keeps them from getting burnout.

The fact he has played Insua towards the end in previous seasons is prove that he rates him. Either way. Insua has jumped the que and he is now level with Aurelio for the left back spot.

We've done well to get so many games out of him, but Rafa couldn't have known that beforehand.

Insua has developed nicely for us and looks much more assured now. If his progress continues he can definitely make the LB slot his own. At the moment I would have Aurelio just ahead of him.

I know what you're saying but anyone who'd seen Insua in the reserves knew he had talent but there were doubts over his concentration/defensive awareness. Add to that Aurelio's fragility then I can well understand why we bought an Italian international left-back.

It wasnt worth the risk of having a injury prone player and an unexperienced defender who was going to go off to South America for a tournie in the middle of the season as well.

Insua looks good but like shaggy said, he's not quite there and the goal against Hull proved he hasnt managed his positioning in the team.
